Tests Show more airline staff Drinking
1. Tests Show more airline staff Drinking
It seems airline staff are drinking and taking drugs prior to going on duty. According to data
provided by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority at least 100 airline staff tested positive for drugs
and alcohol over a period of 17 months.
Random drug and alcohol tests conducted between 2010-2012 used for pre-employment testing
showed that some airline staff were indulging in drugs and alcohol. The issue of alcohol and
drugs in the airline industry came under the spotlight since a Qantas pilot attempted to fly a
plane from Sydney to Brisbane while under the influence of alcohol. Luckily that flight was
grounded in time as other staff became suspicious of the pilot.
The legal alcohol limit for airline staff is 0.02 per cent but the pilot suspected of having
consumed more alcohol than that was grounded from taking off from Sydney in July this year. It
is believed that cabin crew raised concerns about the pilot amid suspicions the captain had
been drinking prior to the flight.
Other airline staff also tested positive but few of their actions have such serious consequences
as airline pilots. Pilots literally hold the lives of hundreds of people in their hands, that is why it is
so shocking that they would risk passenger’s lives by doing something as risky as drinking
before a flight.
