3. INTRODUCTION
Zakat, the giving of alms to the poor and needy, is one
of the five pillars of Islam (the others are declaration
of faith, prayer, fasting in Ramadan and Hajj). It is
obligatory upon every adult Muslim of sound mind
and means.
The literal meaning of Zakat is ‘to cleanse’ or
‘purification’. In the Islamic faith, Zakat means
purifying your wealth for the will of Allah SWT; to
acknowledge that everything we own belongs to Allah
SWT and to work towards the betterment of the
Muslim Ummah.
According to Islamic regulations, Zakat is 2.5% of one
year’s total cumulative wealth. This amount is then
distributed to the poor. Prophet Mohammad (PBUH)
has said “Whoever pays the zakat on his wealth will
have its evil removed from him” (Ibn Khuzaimah and
at-Tabaraani).

4. TECHNOLOGY RELATED TO ZAKAT
Zakat is a mandatory duty on all able Muslims
who meet nisab values. There is no ambiguity as
to the rate at which Zakat should be calculated;
2.5% of all net savings one possesses that is
above the nisab value. Net savings is total
maintained wealth for one lunar year before
Zakat is due. Along with the development of
technology, a lot of facilities that have been
provided to facilitate and expedite the process
of calculating zakat.
Hence, a lots of program have been developed
such as web-based system and phone
application (Android Apps & Apple Store).
Thus, our scope of review only in the web-
based system and smartphone apps (Android
Google Playstore and Apple Apps Store) that
provide the calculation of zakat.

The Zakat and Wakaf Strategic Unit's strategic priority is to promote the
development of the Singapore Muslim Community by striving to fulfill its social
and religious needs. As such, we have set four strategic objectives for Zakat which

To create a world class infrastructure and service for the Zakat payers.
To constantly educate the public on the obligations and virtues of Zakat.

Pahang Zakat Collection Centre was established on 16 September 1995 and
commenced operations on January 2, 1996 with 9 employees. Pahang PKZ
establishment is intended to improve the collection of zakat in the state of Pahang,
which began in 1983 by the Islamic Religious Council and Malay Customs Council
(MUIP) and Pahang Islamic Religious Department (JAIP). Prior to the
establishment of PKZ Pahang, in 1993, MUIP has appointed a private sector body
that is AZSB (Azzakah Sdn Bhd) to manage the collection of zakat in Kuantan as a
trial. Because Azzakah Sdb Bhd managed to increase zakat collection is 100%, then
MUIP agreed that the same method be implemented throughout the state in 1996
with a shareholding of 51% by MUIP and 49% by AZSB. Four years later, in 2000,
MUIP has taken over completely until now, PKZ Pahang.

Lembaga Zakat Selangor (MAIS) , which was established 20 years ago, is
synonymous with the management of zakat in Selangor. As a charity
institution that holds a trust, LZS (MAIS) remains committed to manage and

Today, LZS (MAIS) zakat institutions that stand to be visionary and best
management practices in generating and upholding excellence not only
recipients but also the community as a whole. Many entrepreneurs a viable
birth, children excel in education recipients can continue their studies,
families have a comfortable shelter but the burden of high medical costs can
be alleviated.
Indeed, LZS (MAIS) will continue to hold and fulfill the trust as possible in
order to uphold this pillar of Islam and upheld.

applications that have been developed to make
zakat calculation easier, friendly user and more
convenience.

8. Last but not least, technology development has
a great impact to our next generation. Thus, the
development of technology must be used
carefully to ensure that these facilities will not
be misused by some irresponsibility person in
this era of globalization. Consequently, we
could nurture and develop people to the right
place and the right time so that we can achieve
the target.
Besides that, the acquirement of this facilities in
zakat calculation has been a great help for those
who want to pay zakat and also as a reminder
for us to always remember of payment of zakat
despite of our focus on work. Hence, there will
be no more unforgivable excuse for not paying
the zakat whether zakat fitrah and etc.
