Freedom of the Press
An example of safeguarding freedom Lloyds boss Eric Daniels has no regrets despite losses of £6.3 bn bad debts of £24 bn and disastrous takeover of HBOS. This story’s should have been shown because it is ordinary people who put money into the banks and they should know that if their money is being lost how much the people who lost their money are being paid.
An example of unnecessary intrusion A man from Glasgow complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published an article which inaccurately implied that he was a "career criminal" and that his wife's business was illegitimate. The article had contained several anonymous profiles of individuals alleged to be using nurseries as fronts for criminal activities; the complainant felt that one of these profiles would be recognisable to many people as referring to himself. This was unnecessary intrusion as it was of nobodies interest to know about his private life especially as it wasn’t true.
Do the popular press abuse the power they have? My view on the debate about press freedom is that the press do abuse their power as they print stories that aren’t in the public interest and aren’t meaningful to peoples lives just to entertain people and keep sales high. During the one week that Cheryl Cole was on the front of the Daily Mirror every day an earthquake occurred yet Cherly’s divorce was more important news and because they could that was always printed. However if a story affects the general public at the expense of one person then I feel that it should still be printed.
John Terry’s gagging order I think that individuals should be able to get a gagging order from the press as the types of stories that people gag the press for are those that could be emotionally hurtful to the individual and their families. As the press do abuse their power the people at the centre of a story should be allowed to have an injunction against it. Although if the story is about someone who has sold stories about themselves before then they shouldn’t be allowed to pick and choose what information is printed about them as it is their choice to live in the public eye.
