Reforging gear in cataclysm
1. Reforging Gear In Cataclysm
For the first time ever, the Cataclysm expansion to World of Warcraft offers players the ability to alter the statistics of certain existing items of gear to better suit the needs of their character’s class and talent spec, as well as their individual playstyle. There are quite a few limits on the changes that can be made, but the ability to tailor gear even to this extent is a huge change from the “what you see is what you get” nature of all in-game equipment.
You can gain an edge in Cataclysm by learning how Reforging works and using it to hone your gear’s statistics to give your character that extra boost that will make them that much more powerful at what they do.
Only items with an Item Level above 200 can be reforged. Reforging exchanges a certain number of points in one secondary statistic for the same number in another secondary statistic, and is done by a reforging NPC found in any major city of your faction. Talking to this NPC will open a Trade-style window, where you can place the item, then choose the statistics to be changed with drop-down menus to “Reduce a stat” and “Add a stat”.
The secondary statistics include Spirit, Hit Rating, Expertise Rating, Critical Strike Rating, Haste Rating, Mastery Rating, Dodge Rating, and Parry Rating. You can remove up to 40% of the bonus from one of these and add it to another, as long as the other statistic does not already exist on the item. The cost for this is the item’s vendor price, or a nominal gold fee if the item can’t be vendored. Only one Reforging can exist on an item, although you can undo Reforging and then reforge to a new statistic.
Agility, Stamina, Strength, and Intellect are primary statistics and cannot be reforged.
The key to Reforging in such a way that it gives your character that extra edge is to find out what statistics are most useful to your class and spec – something that is usually discovered online, where there are various articles on the best statistics for certain specs.
For example, Retribution Paladins need to stack Hit, Expertise, Strength, Haste, Crit, and Mastery, in that order, to be most effective. If your paladin is already Hit capped, and you get an item with +200 Haste Rating and +200 Mastery, then it will give you an advantage if you visit a reforging NPC and have 80 Mastery transformed into 80 Expertise, giving the item +200 Haste, +80 Expertise and +120 Mastery.
Statistics have been redesigned and different classes have very different requirements. It is best to educate yourself on the changes as much as possible – and you can learn a lot about Reforging and statistics, as well as countless other important aspects of Cataclysm, from the Cataclysmic WoW Blueprint, a highly detailed and dynamic guide to the exciting new World of Warcraft.
Do you want to discover the most effective WoW Cataclysm's secret, and the fastest path trough to level 85?
