St. James’s Way is The Camino. It
is the route pilgrims follow from
different parts of the world to
Santiago de Compostela in the
north-west of Spain.
9. Who walks The Camino?
• People who walk on the Camino are called
“Pilgrims”. There are about 200.000
pilgrims every year on the Camino. These
people come from all over the world, from
South Africa to Australia and Japan…how
can they communicate??
13. When do pilgrims walk?
• Pilgrims started walking on the Camino
about 1000 years ago!
• Nowadays, the best months to walk are
April, May , June, September and October.
• In the winter it is too cold. In the summer
it’s too hot and there are too many people.

There are different main routes to make the Camino:
1. The French Camino: from France to Santiago, 780
km.You can follow the coast or the traditional route.
2. The English Camino:From England to Santiago.
3. The Portuguese Camino.
4. The Via de la Plata Camino.
19. How do you walk the Camino?
• You have to wear very light and comfortable clothes: boots,
shorts, trainers, T-shirts, a raincoat, a cap…
• Many pilgrims carry a shell with them. It is the symbol of the
Camino.
• You need a very good rucksack.
• You sleep in hostels in rooms with more people, so you need a
sleeping bag.
• You don’t have to spend a lot of money.
• You have to look after your feet.
25. Why do people walk the Camino?
• Spiritual or religious reasons.
• To have different holidays( cheap and
long )and to visit Spain .
• To meet interesting people from all over
the world and to have fun.
• To be alone and to think.
