2. LEONATO
• Elderly noble, who is respected and lives in
Messina, where the play is set. He's Beatrice’s
uncle and Hero’s father. He also governs his
homeland.
3. HERO
Shes the daughter of Leonato, and is very beautiful.
Shes very gentile and soft spoken. Her and claudio
fall in love instantaneously when they lay eyes on
each other. She is metaphorically killed by the
slanderous word of the prince and Claudio, who
questions her worth to him, but eventually returns to
marry her
4. BEATRICE
• Leonato’s neice and Hero’s cousin. Shes
sassy, and in the beginning of te play is 100%
convinved that shed never marry. She loves
mocking people, especially Benedick, whom
she falls for in the end of the story
• “I love you with so much of my heart that
none is
left to protest.” (IV,1,1937)Lyndsey gunnulfsen as Beatrice
5. BENEDICK
• He's a soldier who fights with don
Pedro and Claudio. Just like
Beatrice, he says he will never marry,
and complains about how high his
standards are. He is much like
Beatrice in terms of jokes. He likes
mocking people and poking fun
Alexa San Roman as
Benedick
6. DON PEDRO
• Hes reffered to as “Prince” many times
throughout the play, but is actually a nobleman.
Hes a friend of leonato, and is also friends with
the soldiers that are below him; benedick,
Claudio, etc. he also believes a lot of what he’s
told, but seems to be the most socially powerful
character in the play.
7. DON JOHN
• He’s the ‘brother’ of Don Pedro; melancholy
and generally unhappy throughout the entire
play. He is the man who creates the scheme to
ruin every couples’ happiness in the story and is
the ultimate villain. His action of evil are fueled
by his jealousy of his brother.
8. CLAUDIO
• Soldier who fights with Don Pedro also, and is a
good one at that. When all the soldiers come
back from battle he immediately falls in love
with Hero, Leonato’s daughter. However, he
believe almost anything he's told, which has to
be his hamartia.
9. URSULA
• Ursula is one of Hero’s waiting women, much like
Margaret is, but she plays along trying to sell love to
Beatrice.
• “But are you sure
That Benedick loves Beatrice so entirely?” (III,1,1113)
10. ANTONIO
• Antonio is Leonato’s brother and Beatrice's
father. He sells Hero’s death like no other, and
makes Claudio and Don Pedro feel so bad for
it.
• “Content yourself. God knows I loved my
niece;
And she is dead, slander'd to death by villains”
(V,I,2162)
11. MARGARET
• Margaret is hero’s right hand woman. She
unintentionally helps borachio and don john
deceive everyone into thinking hero is unfaithful.
Shes through and through honest, though, and
doesn’t intend any harm upon Hero.
12. BALTHASAR
• Hes a butler type of worker in Leonato’s
household. Hes on Don John’s side of the entire
playwork, in terms of villainous work. He also sings
this song about how men’s infidelity is more
acceptable than womens’
13. BORACHIO
• This man associates with the villainous Don
John. He follows his plan to make Claudio
believe his to-be wife is being unfaithful to him.
He is the lover of Margaret, which he uses in
his scheme to deceive.
14. CONRADE
• This man is 100% completely devoted to Don John
and his intents. He might have been seen as his right
hand man, ‘partner in crime’
15. DOGBERRY
• Dogberry’s character I feel rests to bring
comedic relief to the entire play and keep the
audience from getting to seriously involved in
whats going on between princes and couples
and families, so on and so forth. He tries to use
formal language and by doing so, makes a
larger fool of himself than he already was
interpreted.
• “One word, sir: our watch, sir, have indeed
comprehended two aspicious persons”
(III,5,1621)
16. FRIAR
• He is originally brought into the play to marry
Claudio and Hero, until the wedding is called off
by Claudio and his whole shebang. He believes
Hero when she says she is a virgin, and return in
the end of the play to offer a humble ‘I told you
so’ to Leonato and Claudio.
• “Did I not tell you she was innocent?” (V,4,2545)
17. ACT 1
• The play opens in Messina, a city in Italy, with Leonato, Hero, and Beatrice.
Soon, Don Pedro enters with Claudio, Benedick, Balthasar, and Don John. it
doesn't take long for Beatrice and Benedick to begin sassing one another.
After that we learn that neither of them want to get married. We also hear
Don John complain about Don Pedro and how he's jealous of him, which is
the blooming of the conflict in this whole play.
18. ACT2
• The Act begins with Beatrice explaining why she never wants to get
married. Like Benedick, she wants to remain single forever, no problem
about it. This is where Hero and Claudio come in, and Don Pedro kinda wins
over Hero for Claudio. Shortly after that, while at a party, Pedro hatches a
plan to get Benedick and Beatrice to fall in love. While that’s being planned,
John is working on his plan to make Claudio unhappy by making him think
that Hero is cheating on him. That plan follows through and at the end of the
act benedick and Beatrice are fighting for eachother’s hearts, but hiding
doing so.
19. ACT3
• Hero has Margaret tell Beatrice that she and Ursula are in the orchard talking
about her. She wants Beatrice to come to the orchard and over hear them
talking Hero tells Ursula that Benedick is in love with Beatrice. Knowing that
benedick feels this way makes Beatrice rethink her feelings for him.
• The scene shifts to Don Pedro, Claudio, Benedick, and Don John. John tells
them that he knows that Hero has been sleeping with someone and that he
can prove it by showing them. Borachio tells Conrade that Don Pedro and
Claudio thought that Margaret was Hero, so Claudio decides that at the
wedding, hes gonna call her out.
20. ACT 4
• Claudio announces at the wedding that Hero has been sleeping with
someone. She tries say it isn’t true, but no one believes her. They ask Beatrice
if she was with Hero last night, but she says she cant be sure where she was.
Leonato believes Claudio and becomes enraged at his daughter. Hero
faints and Claudio leaves with Don Pedro. Benedick promises to go after
them and try to convince them that they are wrong. He professes his love to
Beatrice before he leaves.
• Meanwhile, Dogberry, Verges, and Sexton question Borachio and Conrade.
They learn about Don John’s plan to ruin the marriage between Claudio and
Hero
21. ACT 5
• Beatrice and Benedick share words about the fact they love each other.
They leave to go back to Leonato's.
• Claudio is still under the impression that that Hero has died. He reads her
epitaph and says that each year he will return to read it., and regrets ever
being so cruel to her. Claudio and Don Pedro return to Leonato's. Leonato
has Hero, Beatrice, Margaret, and Ursula put on thick veils. When Claudio
arrives he is to marry Leonato's niece. They never really say it is Beatrice, but
we assume that is who he believes he is marrying. He says he will. When they
finally unmask, Claudio sees that it is really Hero.
• With this ‘comedy’ ending, as Shakespeare writes, Benedick and Beatrice
ask each other if they truly love one another. They both say that they really
didn't, but Claudio and Hero both say they know that Beatrice and Benedick
love each other. They decide to get married anyways
