2. Hannah Brencher
Hannah Brencher is the founder
of the what is now world-wide organization
called “The World Needs More Love Letters”.
In her TED performance she tells the audience
Of her struggles as a college student with
Depression and lonliness, and how her mothers
Letters brightened her day. How they gave her
Reason to 'wait by the mailbox'. Thus spawning
Her idea to start writing loveletters for others!
3. Hannah tells the audience her background story which keeps them engagued and opens up
that personal aspect of her life that allows them to relate to her. She speaks of her time in
college and how instead of using social media or the internet (which she thought was limiting
and uncreative)to communicate with her Mother, she wrote letters by hand.
She thought perhaps not everyone had someone to write to. What if there was someone who
had no one to receive a love letter from? This sparked her interest and thus “The World
Needs More Love Letters” was born.
4. To give her audience an inside scene on the story
she began telling them of how she blogged about
her daily adventures of putting her hand written
letters across her city, and encouraged others to
do the same. If they had nobody to write to them,
she would indeed write one for her random blog-
viewers.
This sparked an interest as she began telling her
audience examples of who she was writing letters
to and how she was making an impact if even in
the smallest way.
(Below is an example of a love letter that was sent)
5. To maintain her audiences attention
throughout her presentation she would
Move around the stage, crack a joke
About her 'Mail Box' prop that she had,
As well as simply using her voice.
Hannah is very passionate about this
Program she was unconciously starting
to build. Just from watching her you could
see the passion in her voice and read her
Body language well enough to show
the emotion and energy behind
this whole project.
6. Hannah subconciously follows the
TED commandments.
She tells you her story and experiences so
Personally it almost makes you think you're
Not watching a presenter but sitting down
Drinking coffee listening to a long-lost friend
Tell their stories and adventures of their
time past.
None of this is business. It's all personal.
Everyone is personal. No matter the distance.
No matter the person. She cared,
no questions asked.
That's why she's now chosen as a TED2013
Global Talen Search Finalist. Her warm heart
sparked the eyes of the nation...
...of the globe.
7. DYNAMISM RATING: 5/5
Hannah opens her heart and pours out an almost
Motherly form of unconditional love for people
All over the world. Her persona on stage is great,
The passion and energy kept the audience
Intrigued, and the analogies she had towards
Social Media and the Internet were blunt yet
Horribly accurate I loved her message, her love,
And her program.
8. Tips from Garr Reynolds:
One of the tips that I've picked up from Garr that
I found to be one of the most important is that
When presenting it's helpful to customize your
Presentation to your audience. Hannah's story was
Already personal in its nature but she I think the
Manner in which she conveyed the emotion, or the
Specific people she brought up (the army man,
A young girl getting bullied, and the depressed man)
Hit a few key points in the audience since those are
Common incidences that people may
have experienced that opened the common ground
That she was pointing out to her audience.
9. From watching Hannah I've picked up a few pointers
On how to relate to my audience. I've seen how
Effective it is to pull personal stories into your
Presentation, and how small you can be at one
Point in your life, only to be make a huge point and
Change someone elses lives. The way that Hannah
Presented in her TED video drove motivation
Through not just my heart, but the audiences. That
Is something that I need to remember to use.
Motivation moves people. Motivation can change
Lives. Motivation can get things done.
10. Comparison:
To compare Ken Robinson and Hannah Brencher I would have to say that their styles are
different but similar in their own ways. Hannah is more of a storyteller who speaks from
experience and passion in a more casual manner where as Ken Robinson relies heavily on
jokes and humor to drive his point and to maintain his audiences attention.
They both incorporate personal experiences and yet find ways to use them in alternative
manners. Ken Robinson tends to speak very quickly, use sarcasm, and asks questions to
drive his points where Hannah uses pauses to accentuate her points. Both very effective
methods to use!
11. Tips to Classmates:
The easiest tip I can give you guys from watching
Hannah would be to speak with your heart. If you
Are personal and you tell a story, people will find
A way to relate with you. When they relate with you
And what you're saying they're more likely to
Understand and actually 'get' what it is you are
Trying to get across to them.
