• Large corporations being fined for illegal waste disposal or improper storage practices far too often. Keeping up with
the myriad of local, state, and federal requirements is difficult.
• HAZWASTEs in different states will be treated differently. It is very difficult for any organization to understand all
waste management rules and regulations and set their HAZWASTE disposition process aligned to those.
• Especially in case of large companies, who are having their warehouses, Distributions centers and Stores spread
across several locations across the U.S., limited and/or decentralized EH&S staff or knowledge, Standardizing the
Waste disposition process will be a nightmare.

• Segregation of a damaged SKU under Hazardous kind is differ from state to state across the states. And also within
the same state hazardous nature consideration will change in a week time. So Need continuous eye on regulations of

in CA. Sometimes due to the revisions in the same state policies, same lip color may become some other kind
of Hazardous material over the months.
• When SKU get damaged and leaking, then Hazardous nature will come to act. It mixes with other Hazardous material
possibly causing of chemical reaction and may cause explosions. That is the importance of segregating the damaged
products (Wastes) into appropriate bins and dispose it in a proper way to avoid penalties.

6. What is Hazwaste?
On very High level there are two types of wastes existing hazardous and non-hazardous. It’s important to know the
difference between them.
Hazardous waste: These are wastes determined by state and federal laws to be hazardous when thrown away. These
wastes must never be thrown away in the compactor, trash bins, or down sinks or drains.
Non-hazardous waste: These are the wastes that are not regulated. This is general trash that does not need special
disposal. It also includes non-regulated recyclables like cardboard, Styrofoam, stretch wrap, etc.

7. What is HAZWASTE disposition?
• Once the hazardous waste items have been identified, processes can be put in place to help ensure the
proper handling, storage and disposal of these materials.
• Based upon the customer’s chemical inventory, Waste Management Services companies provide waste
classification data and information through a comprehensive review of the manufacturer Material Safety
Data Sheets (MSDSs) and a meticulous process of determining the appropriate Federal and State-specific
waste codes and descriptions for a customer’s products should they become hazardous waste.
• To make this data actionable, these Waste Management Services companies converts this information
into client-specific codes or bucket indicators to provide employees proper and relevant guidance beyond
the regulatory codes.

8. What are the Waste management services
companies?
• The Waste Classification service provides assistance with the identification and classification of items that may be
regulated as hazardous waste at the Federal and State-specific level. Few companies will take this task as their
primary USP.
• These companies provides a solution which streamlines and takes the guesswork out of the process of identifying
and classifying hazardous waste.
• Eg: Waste Management (WM), 3E, Progressive Waste Solutions, Clean Harbors, Republic services, Steri-cycle etc.,

9. What is Material Safety Data Sheet?
Business will send the articles which he deals with to the Waste Management services companies.
Depending on the contents of the Articles, Waste Management Services companies will decide the nature of articles
when they damaged and will decide the HAZWASTE type this article will belong to.
This information will come as Material Safety Data sheets to the Business to follow it in their disposition area to identify
the correct HAZWASTE type of the damaged article.
Material Safety Data sheets will contain lot of other useful information along with disposition nature of HAZWASTE. It is
intended to provide workers and emergency personnel with procedures for handling or working with that substance in a
safe manner, and includes information such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point,
etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, and spill-handling procedures.

10. Waste Disposition process in general
1. Damaged products in the warehouse will go into Damage collection totes. The moment it got shifted to tote, the
inventory will be reduced from the unrestricted stock and stock will be shown as damaged.
2. Damaged product can be returned to the vendor or It can send for disposition. If the product is non-leaking and is
eligible for reclaim, then pack it in separate box and send it to vendor to claim the money.
3. If the product is leaking, it shouldn't be sent back to the vendor even it is eligible for reclamation. Note such articles
and inform the vendor about it. Send the product to disposition bins as per the nature of the SKU. Reclamation
process will take care of financial settlements.

4. At the disposition area:
Check the Hazardous nature of the article.
Disposition area will have many separated
bins depending on the different
Hazardous types of waste they expect.
Like Organic peroxides, Corrosive acids,
Oxidizers, Organic Peroxide, Corrosive,
Flammable solids, Flammable Liquids
Flammable Gases.
Each bin can have the poster with
corresponding symbols. Some examples
are shown below.

5. Waste Storage Requirements:
• All wastes must be properly stored for shipment
• Properly labeled
• Not leaking
• Lid fits securely
• Containers must be closed when not in use
• Barcodes need to be facing outward. Can have Labels multiple places too.
• Leaking containers should be placed in a clear plastic bag

6. Each bin will have the bar code to identify the kind of bin it is.
7. As per the suggestion made by the Material Safety Data sheets, Person in the Disposition identify the Bin this
damaged article should go.
8. Person at disposition place will keep the damaged article into corresponding bin. Do not place incompatible waste
types into the same container.
9. If the article is not having any HAZADOUS nature then it will got to TRASH. TRASH can be disposed without any
special care.
10. After all the Segregation happens, Third party vendor will come and collect all the bins and will dispose as suggested
by EHS companies.

14. Hazwaste disposition using SAP standard module
If it is a manufacturing industry, then they should plan
for managing the waste came out of the production.
They have to plan End-to-End Waste Management
lifecycle process that is from waste storing to Waste
disposal. In that case client should go with SAP EHS
module to manage end to end waste management.

15. Do we need SAP standard module for Waste
disposition?
If the industry is Retail, no need to have such complex integrations and other modules. Because there won't be any
manufacturing taking place. If the plant is able to segregate the damaged item into correct category of HAZWASTE and
put in that particular bin, then their work is done.
We can develop an independent customized module in SAP using ABAP. 3rd party vendors who work on disposition of
waste will take care of the rest ie., picking the waste from the Warehouses or Distribution centers and dispose as per
law.

16. 5 steps to have cost effective HAZWASTE disposition
- Using SAP customized module
1. Material Safety Data sheet will be copied from the Waste Management Services companies site to our servers in frequent
intervals say weekly. This can be done using the FTP functionality and a schedule scripts in Tidal or similar job schedulers.
2. Tidal will call the ABAP Proxy thru the BODS and store the details it in the SAP Ztable for further validations while disposing
the damaged articles.
3. Separate transaction was created using ABAP and keep as menu option in RF menu. Give this transaction access only to the
roles who work in disposition area.

- Using SAP customized module
4. RF transaction:
• Takes the article details on scanning article barcode.
• Check with the Material Safety Data Sheets for the HAZARDOUS nature of the article.
• Suggest the disposition bin the damaged article should go.
• Validate the bin correctness after scanning the Bin barcode.
• Store all the information about the disposition for Audit purposes in SAP customized tables.
• Store the errors in case of :
 Article disposition information is not available.
 New bin type(HAZWASTE type) suggested by RF transaction.
 RF label is not clear to read
5. Supervisor can Audit for the few of the articles depending on the Audit records pulling as report from SAP tables as SQ00 or
ABAP ALV reports. Handover the reports to the 3rd
party disposition company along with bins giving the bins and contents for
proper disposition . It helps your company as well as the time saving for the 3rd
party vendor for disposition .
