As Creative Director for LA's premier vintage ultra-lounge, the Edison (considered a jewel
of downtown) Fauve oversaw all design aspects of the venue. The Edison aesthetic is so
splendid that Fauve was the first choice to guide the renovation of another unique historic

"With the Edison, it was incredibly satisfying to create an environment that moves and
entertains on a sensual level. It's a design magic act -- instantaneous, as soon as a person
walks through the door. They get transported back to a place and time when everything
and anything was possible. That innocence was intoxicating, rich and sexy. When I wear
my designer hat, it's my job to convey and protect the story -- dancing with the forces of
constructional and financial feasibility while pushing out of the box."
Fauve has also worked as conceptual art director of library, museum and theme park
projects (Universal Studios, Singapore), including concept, web design, illustration, blue
sky and branding for major corporations and rich media web ventures.
"In 1990, I got very into my Mac, which got me much more into design. I was a big-
picture guy, a puzzle-maker of sorts and needed more out of art, so I broke off to start
Fauve Creations -- a computer- branding- advertising- and design-based company.
Finally I found air, new levels of problems to solve, multi-disciplined technologies to
explore and larger stories to tell. Who knew I'd fall into this design path of branding high-
end entertainment venues."
On the mural front, using a giant wall as a canvas is an extraordinary feat and seems like
an impossible undertaking to many artists. What comes to mind initially is the sheer
impossibility of creating a 28,800 square-foot photorealistic mega-masterpiece, then
there's the danger of hanging off the side of a 20-story building to create it.
"Generally the public, and so many of my peers and colleagues, think it's paint-by-
number. They come down just to see how I transpose a letter-size photo onto a 100 ft.
wall. It's no mystery though. I get the sketch down by either grid, projection, or patterns,

2. then I paint it top to bottom, looking at the original artwork. I approach it like any other
painting -- only bigger. It's humbling, because even after I explain the process, people are
STILL baffled! They just get that familiar glaze over their eyes. I guess I've had some
phenomenal teachers who've taught me how to deal with scale -- consequently I look at a
massive wall and it just doesn't look very big to me. The teams I work with now can
finish a 100 ft. x 240 ft. mural in 6 days...most people can't finish a 2 ft. x 3 ft. canvas in
6 months. Put another way, we can paint a complex pictorial mega-mural in less time
than it takes some painters to cover the same area in one color."
One of the original LA "walldogs" (a term meaning a painter of exterior wall murals),
Fauve started his off-the-wall career at 17 studying with artist Charles Nevad. Once
learning the fundamentals of painting he joined noted activist muralist Eva Cockcroft on
a large exterior mural in Warrensburg, NY ("Toward a People's Art: The Contemporary
Mural Movement," Cockcroft, 1977). In 1986, Fauve assisted artist David Larks on some
of the earliest giant LA walls such as the 100 ft. x 70 ft. Nike/Scioscia. In 1987, Fauve
and Larks formed Adrem Creative and went on to paint countless murals, such as the
well-known 70 ft. x 60 ft. Nike/Bo Jackson mural at Hollywood and Vine ("Street
Gallery: Guide to 1000 Los Angeles Murals," Dunitz, 1998), setting the standard for
mega-murals in Los Angeles.
Accordingly, Fauve's reputation grew and he was commissioned to design and paint the
LA Marathon Mural "Year 2026" on the I-10 freeway (1994) and the mural duet "To Be
With You" at Hillside Memorial (2007). These are just two of the hundreds of paintings
and murals Fauve has completed for public, private, film and television to date.
"The scale and complexity, the height, the artistic challenge, seemingly impossible
deadlines and the physical endurance it takes to complete a mega-mural is extreme. It
keeps me laser-focused and in pretty good shape. That's why I get out there and really
miss it if I haven't done it awhile. I learn something new about visual language every time
I go up there -- then I apply it on the ground in all my design works."
Fauve's multifarious interests don't stop there. With a passion for creativity in all forms,
he is a prolific singer/songwriter of over a 500 songs (Star Search alumni, 1990) and fine
artist who has shown his works at galleries throughout the LA area such as Barnsdall,
Patrick Moore Gallery (San Diego) and the Latino Art Museum. Fauve has also made a
mark in the area of camouflage art, making people invisible to camera by painting them
into the background (click Fauve Camouflage Art Slideshow).
"As a designer, artist and musician, I hold a passion for all forms of expression. My
commercial background has instilled in me an appreciation for tight, pictorial work.
However, I seem to derive greater freedom from my comparatively petite canvases and
my musical creations. I like to sing the heart of the piece while giving the eye its candy."
