8. Question
X was introduced in India in 1977 on the offset of company Y from India. Y left India as
according to the Indian law at that time foreign company had to partner with some domestic
company and disclose its formula. X quickly became the most popular and achieved a near
monopoly among similar products in India during the 1980s. In 1991, when the Indian
government opened the market to multinationals, Z was the first to come in. X and Z
subsequently engaged in heavy competition for endorsements. Z advertisements included
major Indian movie stars like Juhi Chawla, while X increased its spending on cricket
sponsorship. In 1993, Y re-entered the market, and the three companies competed intensely.
Later in the year, Y bought the X and its sister brands for $60 million. When these were sold to
Y, X had a market share of 85 percent in India. Despite its strong overall equity, the brand was
losing its popularity among the core age group of 12- to 25-year-olds, partly due to a lack of
advertising, as Y thought to have its flagship product as the main product in the market. Later Y
realised and fielded X as the major competitor for Z. Today, X is the leading in India, with 42
percent of market share. It is especially popular among teenagers, young adults, and people in
