Shavarsh Vladimirovich Karapetyan
(born May 19, 1953 in Kirovakan) is
a retired Soviet Armenian
finswimmer, 11-time World Record
holder, 17-time World Champion,
13-time European Champion and 7time USSR Champion.
3. KARAPETYAN’S HEROIC DEEDS
Shavarsh Karapetyan is mostly
known as a man, who did several
heroic deeds, as a result of which
he saved lives of many people. His
most famous rescue took place on
17th of September, in 1976, when
he pulled 20 people out of the
trolleybus, which sank in Yerevan
Lake.
4. SHAVARSH’S BROTHERS
Shavarsh Karapetyan has two brothers: Kamo and Anatoly. They also were
finswimmers in their youth. It should be noticed, that Kamo helped Shavarsh
in his saving people in 1976.

5. HERO’S FAMILY
Now Shavarsh Karapetyan lives in Moscow. He has a wife, two daughters and
a son. It also should be noticed, that a main belt asteroid, 3027 Shavarsh,
discovered by Nikolai Chernykh, was named after Karapetyan.
6. FOLLOWING KARAPETYAN’S
EXAMPLE
As a conclusion, I would like to say, that I try to follow Shavarsh’s example
not only because he was a perfect sportsman or 17-time world champion, but
because he is a good man, who would sacrifice his life in order to save another
man’s one.
