3. Storyline
• A young happy family move into a new home but
after some time weird things start happening . A
bigger problem arises when the son slips into a
coma overnight without a reason. The wife starts
to doubt whether everything is ok and eventually
makes her husband believe it too. An experienced
woman is called to deal with this problem and
send off the father to rescue the boy in the world
of ghosts. The son is brought back but it is
realised that the fathers soul is stuck in the spirit
world .
4. Propp’s character theory
• 1. the hero = the father
• 2. the villain = the spirits
• 3. the donor / dispatcher = the woman
experienced in getting rid of spirits
• 5. false hero = /
• 6 . The helper = various character
• 7. the princess = the young boy
• 8. the father = various characters
5. Todorov’s theory of narrative:
• Equilibrium – at the start of the film when the
family move into the house
• Disruption – when weird things start happening
• Recognition – the expert states the boy is
haunted
• Repair – the father goes and gets the son
• Reinstatement/ new equilibrium – everyone
celebrates return of the boy
• However, there is a new problem
(disequilibrium).
