ATLANTA, June 18, 2013 -- The National Meningitis Association (NMA) and Paraiso Vineyards of
Monterey County, California, launched a campaign called “A Toast to Celebrate Prevention.”
Paraiso, an award-winning vintner, will donate $3 for every bottle of 2010 Pinot Noir sold
through its website (www.paraisovineyards.com) when purchasers use the code NMA2013. As
an added benefit, the vineyard is discounting every bottle sold through this campaign by 26
percent.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Paraiso Vineyards,” said Lynn Bozof, president of NMA.
“Their generosity will allow us to advance our mission by strengthening our education and
awareness programs.”
NMA is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded by parents whose children have died or live
with permanent disabilities from meningococcal disease. One of NMA’s key programs is a
campaign called Moms on Meningitis (M.O.M.s). Through this program, M.O.M.s have the
opportunity to share their stories and raise awareness of the availability of vaccines to protect
against meningococcal disease.
Meningococcal disease strikes about 1,500 Americans each year, leading to death in
approximately 11 percent of cases. Among those who survive, up to 20 percent suffer
permanent disability such as brain damage, hearing loss, or limb amputations. Adolescents and
young adults are at increased risk of contracting meningococcal disease, and they are also more
likely to die from it.
Although rare, meningococcal disease moves rapidly and can lead to death or serious
complications. It is also very difficult to identify, which makes vaccination important. The U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends routine vaccination for all
adolescents at age 11-12 with a booster dose at age 16.
2. “Paraiso Vineyards recognizes the terrible impact meningococcal disease can have on families,”
noted Jim White, spokesperson for Paraiso. “This campaign is our way of protecting the future
by working with NMA to raise funds and awareness.”
Paraiso Vineyards is owned and operated by the Smith family, one of the pioneering families of
the wine and grape growing industry of the Santa Lucia Highlands, in Monterey County,
California. They have built Paraiso Vineyards into one of the world’s perennial wine brands
since its inception, in 1973.
