I heard something Down below Maybe it was just the snow Collapsing over the unhinged door Falling onto the floor? But there it is again louder this time but I don’t take a chance on a dime and so through the passage I flee down the hidden stairway through the dungeon across the bones scattered by tortured souls and I’m out out into the searing cold out into the frost hopefully not getting lost but there in the darkness there it is I stare I stare as a dead man would With unsaid, now unspeakable thoughts on his tongue Dying with every word Until he can say no more But leaving the listener hanging As I did now As I stare The wax slowly drips Drips down the candle onto my hand I almost don’t notice Until my hand starts to burn I drop the candle So now only the light of the moon And that glowing, growing sense of suspense and fear start to overcome me Too fascinated to run But too horrified to step closer It is like if a dead man’s soul floated over his body Chained to his cage until something was done about it Chained in by the fence between life and death Real and unreal However I am still closer to reality And although there is no sound around me A lone wolf can be seen on a hill far away Sticking its frostbitten nose to the wind About to cry out to the moon That is the distraction I need Something to take my eyes off the sight in front of me And with my eyes straying from the wolf I run into the woods behind me Trying not to look back
