2. Your Task
• You are going to construct two case studies of
urban development on Green Belt areas in the
Rural-Urban Fringe.
• This will be done over the course of two lessons
and one homework, with the second homework
putting it into practice with an exam question.
• You will work in pairs – but not your usual pairs!
• Outline of task on next slide…
3. Task Outline
Person A
Person B
1. Research the positive
outcomes of developing
on the Cribbs Causeway
Greenbelt area
surrounding Bristol.
2. Research the negative
outcomes of developing
the Madejski Stadium
and Reading Gate Retail
Park.

4. How to do it
• Read through the relevant articles on scoop.it, these
will give you an introduction to the two case studies
and offer a useful starting point.
• Include:
– The location (find maps), parties involved, timescales etc.
– Specific information related to the plans, some of which
are already in place, others are plans for the future.
– Take a number of points of view when conducting your
research – effects on the environment, local
community, wider community, economic effects, social
effects etc.
– Conduct your own research!!
We will use the first half of tomorrow’s lesson to debate both of these case studies.
You need to know your stuff – either side of the argument is valid and can win the
debate!
5. Ideas for discussion – not specific to
these case studies!
• Older people and younger teens, those who cannot
drive, may find the
• new developments less accessible.
• Farmers could benefit economically or lose out socially.
• Excessive commuting causes delays and atmospheric
pollution as country
• roads take on more traffic for which they were not
designed.
• Conflicts may arise between the new townies and the local
folk.
• Loss of wildlife habitat and natural environmental
degradation.
