Who owns the film? <ul><li>Hanna-Barbera produced “The All-New Popeye Hour” in 1978-1983 on CBS. </li></ul><ul><li>Hanna-Barbera was first formed in 1944 by William Hanna, Joseph Barbera, George Sidney </li></ul><ul><li>In 1991, the company was purchased by Turner Broadcasting System. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Representation <ul><li>Popeye is the main character and the hero of the show. He is a sailor, with muscular fore arms and has a tattoo of an anchor on one of his arms. He is married to Olive Oyl and constantly battles his wretched enemy, Bluto. </li></ul><ul><li>It is his role to save Olive every time she gets kidnapped by Bluto. </li></ul><ul><li>Whenever Popeye eats spinach, he gains super human strength which he uses to fight off all the villains. </li></ul><ul><li>Bluto is the villain of the story and is very big and mean looking. Kidnaps Olive Oyle in almost every seen because he is either madly in love with her or just wants to get back at Popeye (his enemy) or both. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Audience <ul><li>The audience of Popeye are young children from the ages of 6-10. This age is the most vulnerable, because it is when the child’s personality/outlook on life starts to develop for the first time. The scenes and issues that the cartoon focuses on are very simple and straight forward. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Genre/Subgenre <ul><li>The cartoon is based around the action/adventure genre, because Popeye sometimes has to travel a long way to accomplish his mission. Popeye has fierce battles with Bluto, which show the action. </li></ul><ul><li>There is also some educational part to the cartoon as well. Popeye sucesfuly demonstrates how healthy spinach is for you. Important lessons about safety. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Narrative <ul><li>The Narrative follows Todorov’s theory, because there is always peace and calm in the beginning of the show. However as the story goes on, a villain of some sort always comes into play and needs to be stopped by Popeye and his spinach. At the end of the cartoon, there is peace and quite once again. </li></ul>
  7. 7. What is the relevance of animation in our society? <ul><li>Animation is mostly aimed at the younger audience, since animation has bright colours and usually involves stereotypes for children to recognize. Ex. Bluto has a low, deep voice which makes him sound evil and scary. </li></ul><ul><li>Since most of the audience of animations are children, it is vital that the content which is in the cartoons are suitable for the children and will not corrupt them in any way. </li></ul>
