SKILLS TRAINING VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROJECT (STVEP), NIGERIA
Architecture
This Capita Symonds-designed scheme comprises nine modular vocational colleges in Nigeria. The brief required every campus above to

multipurpose use and can fit into any of the existing campuses either as infill development or new teaching complexes linking into the
existing teaching facilities.
The STVEP supports the Federal Government of Nigeria’s poverty reduction initiative which seeks to expand access to basic non-formal

STVE opportunities and will also contribute to the government’s bid to achieve UN Millennium Development Goals.

vocational qualifications, as well as those wishing to follow a more academic route. For
visitors arriving at the main entrance from the west, the most prominent feature of the

ERBIL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT,
IRAQ
Architecture
The project comprised a new 4km
runway – one of the longest in the world
– specifically designed to accommodate
the huge Airbus A380; associated airfield
infrastructure; a main passenger
terminal and VIP terminal with capacity
for three million passengers (with
possible expansion to six million);
ancillary buildings; and, critically, the
development of the landside access road
to the airport site. Capita Symonds
developed the concept and detailed
design for the main passenger terminal,
VIP terminal and administrative building.
A24 AUTOESTRADA (VISEU TO
CHAVES), PORTUGAL
Consultancy
The A24 is part of the Portuguese
State Shadow Toll Road Concession
Programme. It links Viseu, Vila Real
and Chaves with a high quality dual
carriageway motorway – with links to
other new motorways in Portugal and
Spain. The road fully opened to traffic
in July 2007, after a 5½ year
construction period. A number of
large viaducts, long sections of steep
grades and other engineering features
were needed to fit the motorway into
the mountainous topography of
Northern Portugal.

CROSSRAIL TUNNELLING ACADEMY LONDON, UK
Multidisciplinary
Capita Symonds provided multidisciplinary services on the Crossrail Tunnelling and
Underground Construction Academy (TUCA) Crossrail is sponsoring at Aldersbrook
Sidings, east London. 3500 employees from the Crossrail supply chain will be trained at
TUCA before being allowed to work underground on the programme. Areas of study will
include the Tunnel Safety Card (TSC), sprayed concrete lining and Tunnel Boring
Machine (TBM) operations. Crossrail intends to establish a new ‘not for profit’
establishment to manage TUCA.

DUBLIN AIRPORT
Lead consultant / architecture
The demand for additional check-in
facilities at Dublin Airport led DAA
(Dublin Airport Authority) to identify
an unused basement area as a site for
a new check-in zone. The concept
used innovative lighting techniques
and materials normally used
externally – such as terracotta panels
– to give the impression of natural
daylight. The fast-track programme
led to the use of pre-fabrication and
systems that could be installed
quickly including the ceiling/lighting
units, check-in desks and wall finishes.

REIMS METRO, FRANCE
Monitoring
Capita Symonds undertook the construction and operational monitoring for the lenders
– including the European Investment Bank – behind the Reims Tramway in Northern
France, having previously worked on the Financial Close of the €350m scheme. The
11.2km tramway, which covers 22 stations and operates for 19 hours a day, features a
sophisticated ground power supply system for part of the route, enabling the historic
character of the city centre – and in particular the architectural perspective of the
cathedral – to be preserved thanks to the absence of overhead lines.

KING’S CROSS TICKET OFFICE
REDEVELOPMENT, LONDON, UK
Multidisciplinary
The 2000 sq m Northern Ticket Hall
at King’s Cross St. Pancras
Underground station, which is located
to the west of King’s Cross mainline
station and to the north of the Great
Northern Hotel, increases station
capacity and provides a major boost
to passenger movement between
mainline services at King’s Cross and
St. Pancras International stations and
the London Underground network. It
will also play a vital role in the transfer
of passengers during London 2012.

DELHI PERSONAL RAPID TRANSIT (PRT) SYSTEM
Multidisciplinary
The proposed Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system in Delhi will feature 'pod cars'
transporting individuals or small groups - usually no more than six in a car - on an
elevated track in battery-powered driverless vehicles.
In 2009 Capita Symonds was appointed by Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit
Systems Limited (DIMTS) to carry out an initial techno economic feasibility study into
the scheme. The study considered all aspects of route planning, demand assessment,
engineering feasibility and business case evaluation for the PRT. It also provided an
assessment of operations and financial forecasting of revenue.
In 2011, on the recommendation of the Delhi Chief Minister, Capita Symonds was again
appointed by DIMTS to provide a report recommending the preferred location for the
PRT from five proposed areas across the city.

DELHI REGIONAL RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM (RRTS)
Multidisciplinary
Capita Symonds is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR)
for the 110km Delhi-Sonipat-Panipat 'corridor', part of a
proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) for the
National Capital Region (NCR) which consists of eight
corridors. NCR is a highly urbanised region spread over four
constituent states of Haryana, NCT-Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar
Pradesh. As its population is expected to grow to 64.14 million
by 2021 an efficient transport system is vital in order to
facilitate the region's development. Capita Symonds' scope of
work includes an alignment report which comprises a review of
corridor characteristics; identifying and reviewing possible
alignment options through each section of the corridor; and
identifying land parcels and station locations.
DELHI BUS RAPID TRANSIT (BRT) SYSTEM:
AMBEDKAR NAGAR TO DELHI GATE
Multidisciplinary
The BRT System will be a network of 'corridors' which are used
by buses within the city. This particular project provided
remedial measures for traffic congestion on the 14.8km
corridor from Ambedkar Nagar to Delhi Gate, which consists of
17 major signalised junctions, through the provision of an
Intelligent Transport System (ITS). Capita Symonds was
appointed by Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit Systems
Limited (DIMTS) to identify, and oversee the implementation
of, the ITS. The scope of work included an assessment of the
existing system and the proposal of engineering changes to the
layout of the highway in order to improve road safety as well
as traffic and bus flow through the corridor. A detailed
simulation model for the corridor was also set up to test
various bus priorities and traffic signalling strategies.

DELHI BUS RAPID TRANSIT (BRT) SYSTEM: BADARPUR TO DELHI AIRPORT
AND DHUALA KUAN TO CHHAWALA
Multidisciplinary
Capita Symonds is currently working on behalf of Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit
Systems Limited (DIMTS) to prepare detailed project reports for two proposed new bus
corridors in Delhi - the 25km Badarpur to IGI Airport corridor the 20km Dhuala Kuan to
Chhawala corridor. The focus of the reports is the development of road infrastructure to
suit BRTS corridors as well as improvements to the road network around the corridors in
order to enhance integration with other transport modes. The project comprises traffic
and engineering surveys; preparing micro-simulation and strategic models to assess
impact; economic and financial viability analysis, environmental and social impact
assessments; and operation and maintenance plans. Capita Symonds will also be
involved in preparing and issuing tender documents, evaluating and selecting
contractors, and providing assistance to the client during the procurement process.
