Completed in 2008, the £100m St Helens DTC signals the future for a significant

which makes the whole building intuitively easy to move around, while being
sympathetic to, and integrating with, the local landscape.

patient pathways have been designed to be as short as possible while a centralised
reception and administration area manages the whole building from a location

   NANOSCIENCE AND QUANTUM
    INFORMATION BUILDING (NSQI),
    BRISTOL, UK
    Architecture

Hailed as the quietest building in the
world, University of Bristol’s centre for
    Nanoscience and Quantum Information
    provides state-of-the-art specialised
    laboratories where vibration and acoustic
noise levels are among the lowest ever
achieved, despite the fact that it is
located in Bristol city centre (the size of
    the materials involved in nanoscience
    mean that complete stillness is
    absolutely imperative). Containing an
anechoic chamber (a room designed to
    attenuate sound or electromagnetic
    energy), two cleanrooms, and wet,
optical, and low vibration laboratories, it
provides an ideal space for developing
    future computing, communications and
health technologies, as well as advanced
materials such as those used in the
    aerospace industry.

    Since completion, the Capita Symonds-
    designed laboratories have carried out
    some groundbreaking research including
the development of a super powerful
    quantum computer which uses particles
of light (photons) whizzing through a
    silicon chip to perform mathematical
calculations, and the development of a
novel material made of tiny diamonds
which is more efficient at generating
    energy than conventional photovoltaic
    materials.

 SKILLS TRAINING VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROJECT (STVEP), NIGERIA
  Architecture

This Capita Symonds-designed scheme comprises nine modular vocational colleges in Nigeria. The brief required every campus above to
be expanded to increase the intake of students on average to between 1200–1500 residential students except for the two rural VTCs
which would be expanded to 300 day students. All teaching buildings have been designed as flexible units that can be adapted to
multipurpose use and can fit into any of the existing campuses either as infill development or new teaching complexes linking into the
  existing teaching facilities.

The STVEP supports the Federal Government of Nigeria’s poverty reduction initiative which seeks to expand access to basic non-formal
vocational skills education. In particular, the project will encourage more women, as well as disadvantaged marginalised groups, to access
STVE opportunities and will also contribute to the government’s bid to achieve UN Millennium Development Goals.

   OASIS ACADEMY WINTRINGHAM, UK
    Architecture

Designed by Capita Symonds, this 10,170 sq m academy for 900 11-16 year old students
specialises in sport and health as well as business and enterprise. It also features an
‘education for life’ ethos, ensuring relevance both to those students wanting to achieve
vocational qualifications, as well as those wishing to follow a more academic route. For
visitors arriving at the main entrance from the west, the most prominent feature of the
building is the partially glazed sports hall which provides a glimpse of the academy’s
specialism. On entering the building, immediately beyond the main reception, is the
double height agora space – the focal point to the school which gives access to all the
main learning and community spaces. The design evolves from the standard corridor
access route prescribed in many educational establishments and offers a central focus
    which encourages social interaction.

 MEDICAL FACULTY / UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, HONG KONG
  Architecture

Capita Symonds provided architecture, interior design and landscaping services on the Medical Faculty & Research Centre for the
University of Hong Kong. The project features a Pre-clinical School, Nursing Training and Clinical Research Centre including experimental
surgery. Also included is a Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine, a comprehensive medical library and a lecture theatre complex that
doubles as an international conference centre, acting as a central venue for a number of regional medical schools. Dedicated to the
sciences, engineering, business technology and management, the first phase of the University of Science & Technology opened in October
1991. The design of the campus embodies flexibility, growth and optimum use of shared facilities, reflecting the ever-changing needs of
modern teaching and research. The complex was developed in three phases, covering four sites on 57.8 ha with a gross floor area totalling
over 175,000 sq m, and a student capacity of 7,000. The main challenges were the 123-metre drop, the requirement to use existing
infrastructure, and the need to construct a fully-populated institution in three phases.

The proposed Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system in Delhi will feature 'pod cars'
transporting individuals or small groups - usually no more than six in a car - on an
elevated track in battery-powered driverless vehicles.

In 2009 Capita Symonds was appointed by Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit
Systems Limited (DIMTS) to carry out an initial techno economic feasibility study into
the scheme. The study considered all aspects of route planning, demand assessment,
engineering feasibility and business case evaluation for the PRT. It also provided an
assessment of operations and financial forecasting of revenue.

In 2011, on the recommendation of the Delhi Chief Minister, Capita Symonds was again
appointed by DIMTS to provide a report recommending the preferred location for the

Capita Symonds is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR)
for the 110km Delhi-Sonipat-Panipat 'corridor', part of a
proposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) for the
National Capital Region (NCR) which consists of eight
corridors. NCR is a highly urbanised region spread over four
constituent states of Haryana, NCT-Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar
Pradesh. As its population is expected to grow to 64.14 million
by 2021 an efficient transport system is vital in order to
facilitate the region's development. Capita Symonds' scope of
work includes an alignment report which comprises a review of
corridor characteristics; identifying and reviewing possible
alignment options through each section of the corridor; and
identifying land parcels and station locations.

 DELHI BUS RAPID TRANSIT (BRT) SYSTEM:
  AMBEDKAR NAGAR TO DELHI GATE
  Multidisciplinary

The BRT System will be a network of 'corridors' which are used
by buses within the city. This particular project provided
remedial measures for traffic congestion on the 14.8km
corridor from Ambedkar Nagar to Delhi Gate, which consists of
17 major signalised junctions, through the provision of an
Intelligent Transport System (ITS). Capita Symonds was
appointed by Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit Systems
Limited (DIMTS) to identify, and oversee the implementation
of, the ITS. The scope of work included an assessment of the
existing system and the proposal of engineering changes to the
layout of the highway in order to improve road safety as well
as traffic and bus flow through the corridor. A detailed
simulation model for the corridor was also set up to test
various bus priorities and traffic signalling strategies.
