When 58-yearold Rupabh Mishra (name changed) suffered a heart attack while
running in the colony park recently , his friends were shocked. They couldn't
believe that Mishra who exercised daily for over an hour and even participated in
long-distance running had a weak heart that predisposed him to the attack. They
were not wrong.
Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where he is admitted, found that Mishra's heart
was fine but it was under stress due to strenuous exercise, and that had led to the
attack. “Timely intervention helped in reviving his heart but there is significant
damage to the brain. He is still under treatment,“ a doctor told TOI.
Mishra is not alone. Ex Mishra is not alone. Experts say many people, especially in
the middle-age group, are falling victim to a strenuous exercise and restrictive diet
regimen. Last year, James B Jee, one of the most influential Wall Street investment
bankers, collapsed because of shortness of breath while exercising, and later died.
He had suffered a heart attack, doctors said.

According to Dr Ashok Seth, chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute,
nearly 10% of all heart attack cases that he sees in the non-elderly
group involves patients who do taxing exercises. “Intensive exercise by
a person who is not used to it causes dramatic increase in the blood
pressure. This leads to the heart getting stressed. Intensive exercise is
also linked with thickening of blood and clotting,“ he said. Dr Seth,
however, added that the benefits of exercise outweigh the risks, but it
should be done in moderation.
Apart from a heart attack, unsupervised exercise can often cause joint
damage, especially in the knee and ankle, and lower immunity .

Dr Deepak Chaudhary , director, Safdarjung Sports Injury Center, explained,
“Knee and ankle are the two main weight-bearing joints of the body . When
people, who arenot used to strenuous exercises, take up high-impact
exercises such as jogging, they often end up damaging the joints. We get
many such cases“.
Replacing meals with protein supplements, a common practice among those
looking to lose weight faster, is linked with infections and kidney damage. Dr
Anoop Misra, chairman of Fortis C-Doc, said: “A few days ago, we got a
patient who had fluid accumulation in body tissues. Tests revealed abnormal
protein leakage in the urine (3+ proteins). When we checked the case history
, it was found that the patient, top executive in a Gurgaon-based MNC, had
been taking 1,200 gram of protein daily from food and supplements to lose
weight“.
