  1. 1. Celebrating World Pneumonia Day: Join the fight against Pneumococcal Disease! Have you heard of Pneumococcal disease? Yes, it is indeed a mouthful. Despite beingrelatively unknown to most, Pneumococcal disease is the leading cause of childhood morbidityand mortality worldwide. However, did you know that Pneumococcal disease is the number onevaccine-preventable cause of death in the world? Pneumococcal disease is caused by the streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria and can leadto pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. Globally, pneumococcal disease affects 14.5 millionchildren younger than 5 years of age and more than one third of the deaths occur in Asia. So howit is that such a prevalent virus continues to be virtually ignored in Malaysia? In conjunction with World Pneumonia Day, Pfizer would like to invite you to find outmore about Pneumococcal Disease and to be a part of a new wave of Pneumococcal DiseaseAwareness in Malaysia as an effort to advocate for the inclusion of the Pneumococcal Diseasevaccination into the National Immunisation Program (NIP).
