1. Celebrating World Pneumonia Day:
Join the fight against Pneumococcal Disease!
Have you heard of Pneumococcal disease? Yes, it is indeed a mouthful. Despite being
relatively unknown to most, Pneumococcal disease is the leading cause of childhood morbidity
and mortality worldwide. However, did you know that Pneumococcal disease is the number one
vaccine-preventable cause of death in the world?
Pneumococcal disease is caused by the streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria and can lead
to pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis. Globally, pneumococcal disease affects 14.5 million
children younger than 5 years of age and more than one third of the deaths occur in Asia. So how
it is that such a prevalent virus continues to be virtually ignored in Malaysia?
In conjunction with World Pneumonia Day, Pfizer would like to invite you to find out
more about Pneumococcal Disease and to be a part of a new wave of Pneumococcal Disease
Awareness in Malaysia as an effort to advocate for the inclusion of the Pneumococcal Disease
vaccination into the National Immunisation Program (NIP). Join us on November 9th for a
Parent Training Session, Media Workshop cum Launch of A-B-C- website as a continuation
of our Aim for Broader Coverage campaign supported by the Asia Strategic Alliance for
Pneumococcal Disease Prevention (ASAP), SJ Echo and Pitter Patter.
Date: Wednesday, November 9th, 2011.
