How to Effectively Weatherproof Your Windows with Gaskets and Seals

There is nothing much we can do to avoid bad weather. With the unpleasant changes in the weather
and climate, rains are getting stronger and more destructive. What we can do though is to properly
protect our building structures from the danger that they could cause. Heavy rains and storms can
cause windows to break, or water can seep into the interior of the building structures. Engineers
recommend the use of gaskets and seals to help protect windows to withstand inclement weather.

Effective weather stripping of the windows goes a long way to ensure the stability and durability of
the entire building. Glazing gaskets help to protect windows from breakage caused by sudden strong
force from a storm or even from the stresses of prolonged thermal changes. Glazing gaskets are
used to dry mount glass in a metal or wooden frame for secure placement. Gaskets not only protect
the glass from breakage, but they also act as effective weather-stripping material. They help prevent
seepage of rainwater runoff into the interiors.

A big part of effective weatherproofing of the windows is the material used. Plastic materials are
usually recommended as gaskets and seals for windows. Different production processes are used to
manufacture gaskets and seals. They yield different types of materials, but the durability will rely on
the process as well as the technology that are utilised. The most common process used is the
extrusion process, which involves melting raw plastic and forming them into a continuous profile.

The raw plastic material used for the gaskets and seals also determines if the outcome would be a
highly durable material. It would be good to use gaskets and seals made from thermoplastic
materials as they provide a rigid backing and minimal shrinkage. Thermoplastic provides hard-
wearing qualities to a window gasket or seal. That is why they are highly recommended for use in
any building construction.

Using the right gaskets and seals for windows would help reduce the overall costs of the building
construction and maintenance. Using co-extruded plastic window seals and gaskets fulfil this cost
reduction scheme fairly well as they offer ease of application, while providing excellent weather-
ability. Plastic products made through the co-extrusion process are very capable of withstanding cold
weather stresses.

Weather-stripping a window is very important in any building construction project. While they
appear to be a very small detail in the building design, the proper selection of plastic material for
window seals and gaskets would benefit the building in the long run.
