2. Sportsmanship:
• Sportsmanship is more than offering a congratulations, or a hand
shake in defeat. It’s more than helping an opponent up or saying
“good play”. Sportsmanship is consistency in all of these acts.
Sportsmanship accounts for actions that seem nice in a sports related
scene but really are inherit actions that happen everyday in life. The
atmosphere of competiveness and the result of a win or loss on the line
has disrupted the common view on sportsmanship
3. Example:
This action is something witnessed in
everyday life often and is an act of
helping, by and decent person, this is
common. Within sports, it has become
scarce and now this is considered
sportsman like, which it is. Assisting a
fallen player is the sign of
sportsmanship.
4. Owners and Coaches
• Every coach wants what’s best for his/her team, but like everything,
there is such thing as too much.
• Once a coach reaches the ethical limit of coaching, the problem gets
laid out on the players. Coaching is a complex task that requires the
right mindset, its not fulfilled correctly by every coach.
5. Good Coaches
• Coaches are recognized every season for their coaching
accomplishments, either by the team or the league.
• When sportsmanship is exampled by a coach, or
the team looks up to the coach as more of a mentor,
the coach is doing their job correctly.
• Terry Francona is a prime example of this
type of coaching:
6. Not so Good Coaches
• All coaches have their slip ups, and any example of this includes
yelling, throwing, demeaning acts of any kind or lack of team
commitment.
• A huge ethically wrong act for a coach to partake in is cussing out a
ref of any kind.
7. Health and Safety
• Professional athletes have professional athletic trainers for a reason
• Athletes require a trained type of medical care and many times, this is
properly or improperly displayed.
8. Good vs. Bad
• Good:
• Professionally trained medical
care worker
• The wound or injury is properly
cared for and there is awareness
of any further injury
• The player comes first and the
game comes second
• Any incident is followed up and
overlooked
• Bad:
• No medical training or care
experience
• The wound or injury is
overlooked and forgotten about
• The result of the game is cared
for more importantly over the
health of the player
• Injuries are taken care of too
late or improperly
9. Athletes and their Community
• Athletes hold a certain kind of influence over their community
• Any athlete who makes poor or great decisions causes their
community the repercussions, good or bad.
10. Outreach or Out to Dry
• Athletes and their communities receive the same amount of praise
per event that the athlete partakes in
• Organizations and fundraisers usually aid their own communities and
then reach out from there
• Athletes who do bad by their communities are out casted the most by
their hometowns
11. Fans
• Every team has a fan base
• Fans are the best thing a sports team can ask for.
When a team has support, the road to success
has backing and is aided along
• Fans can get crazy obsessive over teams
however and there is a limit to the proper fan
following of a team or player
12. A Proper Fan, Team Relationship
• Fans are a teams support
• The stronger the support, generally the stronger the team, and
following a team includes cheering and
attending games
• Crowds of people show up an event in
support is an example of proper fan following
• Fans who show their support effectively are
consistent, not overwhelming
13. Crazy Fans
• Riots, fights, assaults, streaking, and vulgar chants are all examples of
over the top fans
• Some fans may go as far as these extreme events, but the case of a
crazy fan can simply occur with too close of a following too a team or
a particular athlete
• When a fan becomes obsessed, their judgement of right and wrong
towards a team or athlete is impaired and this results in a crazy fan
• As a fan, respectable description of the perfect way to be a good fan
goes as far as support
14. In Conclusion
• Sportsmanship is a tricky topic, and its evolution to his point has
shown a decrease in awareness
• In the future it is easy to say that it doesn’t look good for the ethics of
sports improving to a better scene that what it is now. With the young
generations learning from the craziness of todays sports teams, there
can only be worse results in the future. Even with the awarding of
special accomplishments based off of sportsmanship, the motivation
to receive these awards isn’t strong enough to eliminate the acts of
un-sportsman like conduct from the game.
15. If it shows in young
generates, that’s what
the future holds. This
young fan has learned
this behavior and will
grow up accepting that
this is a tolerable ethic
behind supporting
sports teams.
