2. What is Meniscus
and Meniscus
Injury?
Meniscus is a wedge-shaped cartilage
that provides cushioning between your
thigh bone and shinbone. Each of your
knees has two meniscus wedges.
Any activity that causes you to forcefully
twist or rotate your knee, especially when
putting your full weight on it, can lead to a
torn meniscal tear or meniscus injury.

3. Meniscal Tear
Symptoms
A popping sensation
Swelling or stiffness
Pain, especially when twisting
or rotating your knee
Difficulty bending and
straightening the leg.
A tendency for your knee to
get "stuck" or lock up

4. The meniscus can be torn during activities
that cause direct contact or pressure from
a forced twist or rotation.
A sudden pivot or turn, deep squatting, or
heavy lifting can lead to injury.
Sports that require sudden turns and
stops like football, tennis, soccer,
basketball etc may put you at higher risk
for meniscus tears.
Age and Osteoarthritis are also risk factors
for meniscus injury.

5. Diagnosis
A torn meniscus often can be
identified during a physical exam.
Imaging tests may be ordered to
confirm a tear of the meniscus.
These include: Knee X-ray, MRI
and Ultrasound.
Arthroscopy: In some cases your
doctor might use an instrument
known as an arthroscope to
examine the inside of your knee.

6. Initially, you should treat the knee injury
with conservative techniques or the RICE
method:
Rest your knee.
Ice your knee every three to four
hours for 30 minutes.
Compress or wrap the knee in an
elastic bandage to reduce
inflammation.
Elevate your knee to reduce
swelling.

7. Physical Therapy
Physical therapy can help you
strengthen the muscles around your
knee and in your legs to help stabilize
and support the knee joint.
Surgery
If a tear is large, unstable, or causing
locking symptoms surgery may be
required to either repair or remove
unstable edges.

8. Best Alternative for Meniscal Surgery
PRP Therapy (Orthogen P)
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections are a relatively new
nonsurgical therapy that can be used to treat a Meniscus injury.
When the concentrated platelets (PRP) are placed at the site of the
tear. growth factors are released which will stimulate healing of the
tear. The growth factors in the Orthogen P will cause proliferation
and regeneration of the injured tissue. This boosts fibroblastic
events involved in tissue healing causing these tears to heal.

Accelerated and sustained natural healing
No need for surgery
No need for steroid injections
