3. The history of bow ties dates back to the seventeenth cen-
tury with the Croatian mercenaries being the main con-
ceives of the idea. Bow ties came to replace the usage of
scarves as a way of preventing shirt collars from separat-
ing (hence exposing the neck). This practice was later
emulated by the French aristocrats and from then hence-
forth, it spread further and wide to rest of the world. With
time the bow tie began to be associated with the upper
class especially as a symbol of wealth and power. As
time went by, the bow tie evolved further. Different mate-
rials were used to make different bow ties and more peo-
ple could now opt for specific sizes that fitted their necks.
4. During the 19th century, bow ties started being associat-
ed with certain noble professions such as lawyers, doc-
tors and businessmen. It was actually said that these
categories of people wore these ties simply because
they were not a bother during the delivery of duties as
compared to the neck ties. On to the 20th century, the
bow tie continued to be seen as a status symbol but
this time it was more reserved for formal events. Most
people who wore tuxedos always had to put on a bow
tie. Most commonly, men preferred either black or white
bow ties and hence the colored booties became less
popular during this century.
5. Today bow ties are regaining their position in the society
quite literally. Gone are the days when these ties were
only reserved for formal occasions. Nowadays this
trend has crept into the casual world. It is now quite
common to find a person wearing a shirt with a bow tie
and a pair of jeans trousers. Recently it has become
more of a personal style rather than a status symbol
and hence anybody can feel comfortable adorning a
bow tie anywhere at any time of the day.
6. Today on the fashion market, there are numerous types
of bow ties on retail. Lately people tend to concentrate
more on comfort and ease rather than the significance
associated with the bow ties. Bow ties are available in
ready-made forms and hence people don’t have to
waste a lot of time in creating the bow. These ready
made bow ties are availed in large wide varieties of col-
ors, sizes and materials. You can as well choose to tie
your own bow tie and for this reason there are two dis-
tinctive types of bow ties that you can go for (namely
the thistle and the bat wing). These will help you a lot in
perfecting the bow in order to fit your unique preference
and taste.
8. In the recent past, the bow tie has experienced surging
popularity especially after it was featured on the hit
television series “Doctor Who”. The show deemed the
bow tie as a “cool” outfit. Hence if you want to look
“cool” then you’ve got to wear a bow tie.
