Individual Essay Title: Mobile phone can cause social problem in school
Nowadays, many kids have mobile phones. We often see teenagers even our sisters
and brothers talking on their phones, or just as often, texting. It has become a part of everyday
life, and a part of our society and sometimes it can be like a pacifier for impulsiveness, which
is a major component of addiction. However, mobile phones can also be used for less important
reasons, such as excessive amounts of texting. One big issue concerning cell phones and
teenagers is the use of cell phones in school. Many students believe that cell phones should be
allowed in school, especially during class. In my opinion, I disagree with this statement, this
is because it can cause social problems in schools. There are 3 reasons to support my argument
which are cell phones are impersonal and rather than anti-social, cyber-bullying, and sexting.
First, mobile phones can cause social problems, which would only increase if cell
phones were allowed in schools. This is because cell phones are impersonal and rather than
anti-social. For instance, they will not focus on their studies during class. Moreover, for those
who are taking examination, they will lose their concentration and do not have much time to
do revision. In addition, students would have lack of communication among their friends
which would degenerates social skills. Therefore, students should improve their social skills,
which are important in life for jobs, creating good environment with colleagues and making
and keeping more friends.
Second, another social problems that could occur is cyber-bullying. What is cyberbully? According to stopcyberbullying.org, cyber bullying is when a child is threatened,
harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another child using the internet.
How cyberbullying works in student life is there are two kinds of cyberbullying, which is, first,
direct attacks (messages sent to student directly). For example, humiliated student using instant
messaging, blogs, and websites. Secondly, is cyberbullying by proxy (using others to help
cyberbully the victims, either with or without the accomplice’s knowledge). Most typical way
is when cyberbully gets control of the victims and send out hateful or rude messages to
everyone on their buddy list pretending that they can’t get into their account. One of the effect
2. which can lead to cyber-bullying on student, that is undermining student confident, for
example, the student do not want to going to school because they are lack of confident, selfesteem and sense of security. It can affect student performances and attendance at school and
the most dangerous effect is leading to suicidal thoughts. It happens regularly, especially in
high-school. It can affect the school name and which later can become worse. To prevent cyberbully, the school should provide detailed guidance on cyber-bullying. The school should
understand and talk about bullying with the whole school community. They can also educate
the student on cybernetics and the law. As a conclusion, we recommend that a provision is
added to the school's acceptable use policy reserving the right to discipline the student for
actions taken off-campus if they are intended to have an effect on a student or they adversely
affect the safety and well-being of student while in school. This makes it a contractual, not a
constitutional, issue.
Finally, another problem with mobile phones is known as “sexting”, which is when
students send nude pictures, messages and videos of themselves to other students. This is very
inappropriate, and is illegal in some places especially in schools. Furthermore, if the students
have access to their phone all days, chances are the amount of sexting would increase, because
of more time available to do so. Many times, the students participate in sexting without thinking
of the consequences. However, with one impulsive move, they can alter their lives from that
point forward. The consequences that the students suffer are embarrassment and humiliation,
bullying, experiences the end of friendship, and guilt and shame. Take an example for
embarrassment and humiliation towards student, the potential for students to kill themselves is
very high. As a result, the student parents and school will feel humiliated with their child’s
attitude. It is important for parents and school to talk with their kids about these consequences.
Let the school know so the guidance counsellor can keep an eye out for in-school bullying and
for how your child is handling things. Take it seriously.
In conclusion, these three reason social problems that cell phones causes or worsen that
I mentioned are anti-social among student, cyber-bullying in school, and sexting between
student which can become more serious if cell phones were allowed in schools. In my opinion,
schools must inform the students, parents and staff of the misuse of technology and potential
consequences on the school environment and even worse may bring discredit to school. All in
all, schools will be a better learning environment and better prepare students for life in the
outside world if cells phones are continued to be banned during the school day.
