The Part And The Perfect
1. The Part & The Perfect
“Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies,
they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will
cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.
For we know in part and we prophesy in part. But
when that which is perfect has come, then that which is
in part will be done away.” (1 Cor. 13:8–10)
2. The Nature And Purpose
Of Biblical Miracles
• Some Examples:
3. Biblical Miracles
• The dead raised (Acts 9:36-42; 20:9f).
• The sick healed (Acts 9:33, 34).
• The lame and crippled healed (Acts 3:1-10;
14:8-11).
• Prophesy future events (Acts 27:10, 32, 44).
4. The Nature And Purpose
Of Biblical Miracles
• Some Examples:
• The Examples Reveal Their Nature:
• They were instantaneous.
• They were complete.
• Their predictions were always exact.
• The Purpose For Miracles Is Clearly Stated
(Heb. 2:3-4; Mark 16:20; Jn. 20:30, 31; Deut.
18:22).
5. The Purpose For
Biblical Miracles
“how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be
spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also
bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the
Holy Spirit, according to His own will?” (Heb. 2:3–4)
“And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and
confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.” (Mark 16:20)
“And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not
written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:30–
31)
“when a prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, if the thing does not happen or come
to pass, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it
presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.” (Deut. 18:22)
6. The Nature And Purpose
Of Biblical Miracles

7. The End Of Miracles
• When “That Which Is Perfect Has Come”
• When the Gospel was revealed in completion.
• “Perfect” means complete.
• Eph. 4:11-13, “unity of the faith” means
complete.
• The contrast – partial knowledge [spiritual gifts]
to complete knowledge [unity of the faith].
• We are not left with the partial but with the
complete!
Editor's Notes
INTRODUCTION: Much confusion over what a miracle really is. The definition of a miracle: There is not only confusion over what a miracle really is but also over whether miracles still occur today. Because many do not understand what a miracles really is they confuse natural occurrences with miraculous ones. Many fail to make the distinction between the miraculous working of God and the providential working of God. Where the Bible very clearly teaches that God works providentially on behalf of His people today (Js. 5:16), it also clearly teaches that miracles would come to an end (1 Cor. 13:10). The fact that the Bible teaches the end of miracles is not what is disputed but when the Bible says they would end. It is clear that Paul is talking about miraculous manifestation among the disciples in 1 Cor. 13:8-10 and it is clear that when “that which is perfect has come” miracles would end. We can determine the nature of “that which is perfect” by looking at several facts about biblical miracles.
Acts 9:36-32 - Dorcas was raised from the dead by Peter. “Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.” Acts 20:9 - Eutychus was raised from the dead by Paul. Acts 9:33, 34 - Aeneas, bedridden eight years, was healed by Peter and “he arose immediately.” Acts 3:1-10 - The lame man at the beautiful gate healed by Peter and John. He expected to receive something from them but what he received was healing by the power of Jesus Christ. Acts 14:8-11 - A man who had never walked, crippled from his mother’s womb, was healed by Paul. Acts 27:10, 32, 44 - Paul prophesied that they would face peril but if they all remained in the ship then they would be saved. They did what Paul said and were saved from the storm.
It says “That Which” NOT “He Who” - The reason it is translated “that which is” instead of “he who is” is because the Greek word is neuter, genderless, and not referring to a person. We don’t really need the Greek to understand this from the text.
