Learning to Live Inside Out
Lent is a bi-directional season. Or at least it should be. That isn’t how we
usually experience the season, however. Too often, we see the Lenten
journey simply as a journey inward. It is a self-reflective time, an inward
self-examination guided by the question Methodists have asked since the
beginnings of the movement: “How is it with your soul?” A powerful and
important question, to be sure, and Lent is the perfect time to take this
inward journey and to spend some time in solitude and reflection.
While that is a great start or an important component to a powerful
Lenten experience, it can’t be the whole story. Examining your soul is
more than just looking inward; it is also considering the state of your soul
as it walks about in the world. How goes your soul – which is saying, “How
do you live in the world around you? How do you impact, or better, how
does your faith impact your community, your church, your family?”
So, we look inward so that we can live outward. We examine the state of
our souls so that we understand and enhance the state of our relationships
in the world. In fact, that is often how we discover that there is something
wrong, something broken, something neglected in our relationship with
God because we are struggling with our human relationships too.
You know that feeling. That something is just out of place. Something is
broken, or out of sync. The funny wheel on the shopping cart. The tiny
stone in the shoe. You just limp along feeling out of sorts. And when
someone asks you if everything is ok, you don’t even know how to answer.
Because nothing is wrong, really. Just not ... right.
Or maybe you do know. Maybe there was a word spoken that you wish
you could unspeak. Maybe there was an effort you should have made but
didn’t, and now it is too late. Maybe there was a response you should have
held in, an event you should have acknowledged, a call you should have
made. Maybe your brokenness lies heavy on your heart today.
Whether known or unknown, the feeling of disconnect is very real. What
we need is not an explanation, but an antidote. And where better to turn
than to worship? There were works of piety or what we might call the
inward attention to ourselves, and there were works of charity or the
outward living and working in the world around us.
Like the great commandment, these two sides of the same coin cannot
ultimately be separated. That is why this Lenten Season is about doing
both - looking inward and moving outward. We are learning to live inside
out here at NOHO FUMC and we hope you join us at worship and our
Lenten Study on Thursday evenings as we march on towards Easter.

2. March 5 Eyes on Jesus John 3:1-17
Our District Superintendent, Rev. Melissa Roux MacKinnon, will be our guest speaker on this second Sunday in
Lent. We will also share in communion and Pastor Melissa will be available to answer any questions we may have.
March 12 Quenching Your Thirst
We’re thirsty this week. That’s the point. Thirsting for the living waters that Jesus spoke about to the
woman at the well. Our guest speaker, Rev. Mary Dennis will inspire us to drink deeply of the water of
life, so we can run and tell what we have found, like the woman at the well.
March 19 Saved From Blindness John 9:1-41
Do you know what it is like to be chosen? Well, you do because you were. Our texts this week are about being
chosen by God. Most of us don’t think that we were chosen, certainly not to be king like David. But surely, we
chose the jobs that we do and the hobbies that we pursue and the service that we perform, didn’t we? Well, yes.
But God chose too. And not just in the past tense, God is still choosing.
March 26 Waking the Dead John 11:1-45
This is a worship experience of anticipation and of completion. We await the redeeming work of Christ on the
cross, even as we have already received that redemption. We anticipate this journey of suffering, into the depths of
sacrifice and death, even as we know the completion of the work.

A GPS, or Global Positioning System, knows your exact location
on earth. You type into the GPS, exactly where you want to go,
and you listen to the voice to get you there. People trust the voice
on the GPS.
Each of us may take a wrong turn on this journey of life, and we
want to know “the way” to ultimate happiness and peace. We
need help when we go the wrong direction. Sometimes, we think
we know the way and can get to our location on our own and
end up lost.
This Lenten Season, lets reset our GPS, our God Positioning
System, and direct our hearts to Christ. Our ultimate destination
is eternity with our God in heaven. Let’s focus on the perfect
plan that God laid has mapped out for us!

3. “The Way of Love
A Practical Guide to Following Jesus”
Book by Scott Gunn
We will offer a small group process entitled “The
Way of Love,” which is a seven-week curriculum
which will lead us through the major practices that
mark the Christian life. It will follow the rhythm of
Lent, taking us from repentance to the place of
ministry and calling. This is an opportunity to grow
your faith and truly begin to shape your life as a
follower of Christ. If you have been a follower for a
long time, it is a good refresher. If you are new to
the faith, it is a good beginning.

A gorgeous Easter Lily cross is erected in the chancel of the
Sanctuary every year. The lovely plants are given in memory and in
honor of loved ones and are $10 per plant.
The plants may be taken home following the 10:30 am

Garcia, who received bad news after his colonoscopy. She
was with him at City of Hope today, figuring out the next
steps.
• Letha and Alycia Watts are in need of prayers and support.
• Jaz Pinero requests prayers for her friend, Fred Delgado, who
is undergoing cancer treatment.
• Kathi Ellis has been home and back at church! Praise God!

• Kim Matsubayashi requests prayers for her friend’s fiance, Burt. He has been diagnosed with bladder
cancer and had surgery on February 10th. Burt is 73 years old and lives in New York. He survived
prostate cancer.
• Roger Eshelman requests prayers for his sister, Joan Velde, who underwent radiation. Her recent
treatments have not proven to be successful. Joan is hopeful that the radiation will slow the growth of
many tumors from her lymphoma.
• Wendy Welch is concerned for her brother in-law who had shoulder replacement surgery and has
been dealing with a pinched nerve that causes his hands to shake.
• Mychal Guyton is doing well after multiple procedures and had good news at his follow up.
• Rhonda Scott is still recovering after a severe stroke several years ago.
• Amy Pimental and her son have been doing better but prayers are welcome as they manage life.
• DeAnne Hayes is in a special Alzheimer facility and Byron has been at home without her. He is lonely
and misses DeAnne terribly.
• Julie Shuford’s younger brother, Tommy Sullivan, passed away tragically.
• Sebastien’s visit to Children’s Hospital’s cardiology revealed a healthy heart. Chest pains were caused
by growing pains as the chest cavity expands.
