2. Of winter's worst thrust, and the Man, whom Fate
First drove from proud Reliant to Erie's shore,
Where stormy Zephyrus' early-woke rage
Shook sudden the autumn temp'rate hills
With thunder and snow incessant, I sing.

3. Scored by marks of lesser foes, this Titan
Standing high above all others, with bold
words
Addresses the thick tempestuous air:
"Too well I see and rue this dire event
If none stands to offer mighty service
'Gainst nature's foul and fatal fast encroach."
So spake the glint-eyed Giant, hasty
Rushing into the pale blank interminable.

4. He scarce had wand'red when cry and plaint
Of mortal by boreal wrath overcome
Resounds amidst the fearful frost-thick knolls;
Forthwith the Power his brutal Atlas-strength
Applies, bending to his cause, undermining
All, and the frozen prison there unmakes.

5. This done, he tempts again the furious swirl,
And finding some half-wracked for lack
Of needful nourishment, unearths a store
Concealed of provisions sweet; to those
Near starved, the life-giving fare he
brings.

6. O goodness infinite, generosity immense!
Thus all sorrow was induced to joy,
And mighty deeds blazed meltingly forth
As great consolation to simple folk, who,
Foot lifted high over foot, carry on
With steps wand'ring, meek, and slow.
