Abstract
The presentinventionrelatestoa coatedmedical implantwhereinthe coatingcomprisesan
amorphousMe oxide layeroran(Al,Me) oxide layerdepositedbyphysical vapordeposition,and
whereinMe can be one or more of the elementsof Ti,Si,Cr,Hf, Zr, Ta or Nb.The PVDlayerdoesnot
have any bioactive/osseointegratingpropertiesattemperaturesbelow 45˚C.Thismakesiteasyto
remove the implantafterithasbeinginsertedinananimal orhumanbody,e.g.whenusedfor
fixatingfractures.The coatingmayfurthercomprise acalciumphosphate layer,preferablya
hydroxyapatitelayer,whichisgrownonthe PVD layerusinga biomimeticprocess.The coatingmay
be loadedwitha releasableagentsuchasa pharmaceutical agent,anionora biomolecule.The
presentinventionalsorelatestoamethodfor formingthe coatedmedical implant.
