The search for alternative sources of energy has led in various directions. Many communities are burning
garbage and other biological waste products to produce electricity. Converting waste products to gases or oil
is also an efficient way to dispose of wastes.
Experimental work is being done to derive synthetic fuels from coal, oil shale and coal tars. But to date that
process has proven expensive. Other experiments are underway to harness power with giant windmills.
Geothermal power, heat from the earth, is also being tested.
Some experts are trying utility companies to revive hydroelectric power derived from streams and rivers.
Fifty years ago, hydroelectric power provided one third of the electricity used in the United States, but today
it supplies only four percent. The oceans are another potential source of energy. Scientists are studying ways

The nuclear family, consisting of a mother, father, and their children, may be more an American ideal than
an American reality. Of course, the so-called traditional American family was always more varied than we
had been led to believe, reflecting the very different racial, ethnic, class, and religious customs among
different American groups.
The most recent government statistics reveal that only about one-third of all current American families fit
the traditional mold and another third consists of married couples who either have no children or have none
still living at home. Of the final one third, about 20 percent of the total number of American households are
single people, usually women over sixty-five years of age. A small percentage, about 3 percent of the total,
consists of unmarried people who choose to live together; and the rest, about 7 percent, are single, usually
divorced parents, with at least one child. Today, these varied family types are typical, and therefore, normal.
Apparently, many Americans are achieving supportive relationships in family forms other than the
traditional one.

Many years ago, people often said, “A woman’s place is in the home” But Americans do not feel that way any
more. Today, women make up about 43 percent of the American labour force. There are about 45 million
working women in the United States, and a large number of them are married with children.
In 1980 for the first time in the nation’s history, there were more working wives than household wives.
Looking back to 1940, we can see a picture of some very rapid change. In 1940, only 15 percent of married
women held jobs. Today most young women choose to work even when they have young children. Why do
they work? The most important reason is that they need to earn money. But another reason is that women to
day are better educated and they have more opportunities to work in various professions than women had
earlier.

A new study says increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may affect the growth of forests near
the equator. They found that trees in many tropical forests seem to be growing and dying at a faster rate than in
the past, and the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are responsible. Many plants grow
faster when they receive extra carbon dioxide and trees that grow faster also die sooner than they would
normally.
Carbon dioxide is produced by factories and motor vehicles. The gas rises into the atmosphere and traps the
sun’s heat. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they change sunlight to energy. When trees
die, however, they put carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere.
The report says that the dead trees in the tropical forests may then be replaced by trees and plants that grow
fast in the sun. But because the new trees grow faster than those they replace, they are less dense. So they
remove less carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
The report also warns that fast growing plants could prevent the growing of other kinds of plants that usually
grow in areas of low sunlight, which increases the loss of different kinds of plants and animals in the tropical
rain forests.
46) What is the main idea of the reading passage?
A) The increased level of carbon dioxide causes changes in the growth of trees in rain forests.
B) The death of large trees affects the level of carbon dioxide in the tropical forests.
C) Trees grow faster when they receive extra carbon dioxide.
D) Fast growing plants could prevent the growing of other kinds of plants
47) What will happen to trees that grow fast?
A) They will absorb less carbon dioxide than those growing slowly.
B) They will die sooner than they would normally.

The search for alternative sources of energy has led in various directions. Many communities are burning garbage and other biological waste products to produce electricity. Converting waste products to gases or oil is also an efficient way to dispose of wastes. Experimental work is being done to derive synthetic fuels from coal, oil shale and coal tars. But to date that process has proven expensive. Other experiments are underway to harness power with giant windmills. Geothermal power, heat from the earth, is also being tested. Some experts are trying utility companies to revive hydroelectric power derived from streams and rivers. This five-thousand-year-old statue, which has the body of a lion and the face of a human being, is too badly damaged to be completely saved. First, there is not a good drainage system around the statue and too much water has been running into the stone statue for several years. As a result, tiny pieces of salt have been left on the stone and have damaged it. Second, air pollution from the increasing amount of traffic in Cairo is also destroying the ancient statue. The air is so full of poisonous gases that it is damaging the statue even faster. Third, the statue is being destroyed by extremes of temperature. The air is very cold at night, but during the day the stone of the statue becomes very hot under the strong sunlight. Other natural forces such as severe sandstorms attack the statue as well. Finally, the tourists who visit the statue every day also cause a lot of damage to it. 26) Which of the following is NOT true about the statue? A. Part of it looks like a person. B. The nuclear family, consisting of a mother, father, and their children, may be more an American ideal than an American reality. Of course, the so-called traditional American family was always more varied than we had been led to believe, reflecting the very different racial, ethnic, class, and religious customs among different American groups. The most recent government statistics reveal that only about one-third of all current American families fit the traditional mold and another third consists of married couples who either have no children or have none still living at home. Of the final one third, about 20 percent of the total number of American households are single people, usually women over sixty-five years of age. A small percentage, about 3 percent of the total, consists of unmarried people who choose to live together; and the rest, about 7 percent, are single, usually divorced parents, with at least one child. Today, these varied family types are typical, and therefore, normal. Apparently, many Americans are achieving supportive relationships in family forms other than the traditional one. 46) With what topic is the passage mainly concerned? Many years ago, people often said, “A woman’s place is in the home” But Americans do not feel that way any more. Today, women make up about 43 percent of the American labour force. There are about 45 million working women in the United States, and a large number of them are married with children. In 1980 for the first time in the nation’s history, there were more working wives than household wives. Looking back to 1940, we can see a picture of some very rapid change. In 1940, only 15 percent of married women held jobs. Today most young women choose to work even when they have young children. Why do they work? The most important reason is that they need to earn money. But another reason is that women to day are better educated and they have more opportunities to work in various professions than women had earlier. 46) What does this passage mainly discuss? A new study says increased levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere may affect the growth of forests near the equator. They found that trees in many tropical forests seem to be growing and dying at a faster rate than in the past, and the increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are responsible. Many plants grow faster when they receive extra carbon dioxide and trees that grow faster also die sooner than they would normally. Carbon dioxide is produced by factories and motor vehicles. The gas rises into the atmosphere and traps the sun’s heat. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they change sunlight to energy. When trees die, however, they put carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. The report says that the dead trees in the tropical forests may then be replaced by trees and plants that grow fast in the sun. But because the new trees grow faster than those they replace, they are less dense. So they remove less carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The report also warns that fast growing plants could prevent the growing of other kinds of plants that usually grow in areas of low sunlight, which increases the loss of different kinds of plants and animals in the tropical rain forests. 46) What is the main idea of the reading passage? A) The increased level of carbon dioxide causes changes in the growth of trees in rain forests. B) The death of large trees affects the level of carbon dioxide in the tropical forests. C) Trees grow faster when they receive extra carbon dioxide. D) Fast growing plants could prevent the growing of other kinds of plants 47) What will happen to trees that grow fast?
