THE NEED FOR AN
EARTHQUAKE SAFETY
DRILL IN SCHOOLS
INTRODUCTION……
• earthquake is a phenomenon
• earthquake preparedness to instill awareness
• Students are most vulnerable
• teachers and students be oriented to do
earthquake drill
• earthquake drill requires planning and designing of
evacuation procedures.
• earthquake drill requires planning ahead and
constant practice
• Must be known to everyone
• Must be loud enough
• stay in the building while there is earth shaking
• avoid windows, glass and light fixtures
• immediately perform DUCK, COVER and HOLD
• remain in that position until the alarm stops
• as soon as alarms stops, leave the building
quickly but orderly.
• use pre-determined routes to the
designated evacuation area
• avoid stampede
• group students according to
class where they belong
• introduce “buddy system”
Parents participating
• check and make sure all
students are accounted for
• identify problems encountered during the drill
• determine how it can be corrected in future drills
• measure success of the drill against internalized
instructions
• measure the degree of performance of the actors and
the execution of the response plan
