1. NFDA leads the way with green certification
It is encouraging to see that the National Funeral
Directors’ Association is promoting its Green Funeral
Practices Certification Programme again. This is exactly
the kind of leadership that is necessary if people are
going to take environmental issues seriously.
The programme has strict eligibility criteria which cover
a full range of environmental practices – it certainly
isn’t a fig leaf and applicants need to think carefully
about not only their existing environmental credentials,
but also the future in a Green Responsibility Plan.
Funeral Directors must offer itemized goods and
services as well as green funeral packages, sustainable
and biodegradable caskets and urns and – of particular
interest to Naturensbalm – green temporary
preservation methods such as formaldehyde-free
embalming.
Professional development is also a target, with a
requirement that at least two employees have had
recent training on green issues and, in combination with
the Green Responsibility Plan, it is to be hoped that
looking for the best ways to protect the environment
will be an ongoing and developing strategy; after all,
certification must be renewed annually and doubtless
the NFDA is keen to ensure that accredited firms are
living up to their eco-credentials.
There is no doubt that, as environmental concerns
among the general public grow, funeral directors able
to say that they are Certified for Green Funeral
Practices will stand out to consumers... and those
unable to say it will begin to look decidedly old
fashioned.
