12. Islamic Concept of Accountability
The word “hesab” is repeated more than eight times in Holy
Quran. It relates to one’s obligation to account to Allah
(SWT) on all matters pertaining to human endeavor for
which every Muslim is ‘accountable’.
Quran says,
“Allah will not take you to task for that which is
unintentional in you oaths. But He will take you to task for
that which your hearts have garnered. And Allah is Forgiving.
Clement.” (Chapter 2; Verse 225)
13. Again says
“Unto Allah (belongeth) whatsoever is in the heavens and
whatsoever is in the earth; and whether ye make known what
is in your minds or hide it, Allah will bring you to account for
it. He will forgive whom He will and He will punish whom He
will. Allah is Able to do all things.” (Chapter 2; Verse 284)
We all shall be accountable on the Day of Judgment
14. Our beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Sallallahu
Alayhi Wa Sallam) set the highest standards of
accountability. He said
“Beware! Every one of you is a shepherd and everyone is
answerable with regard to his flock. The Caliph is a shepherd
over the people and shall be questioned about his subjects (as
to how he conducted their affairs). A man is a guardian over the
members of his family and shall be questioned about them (as
to how he looked after their physical and moral well-being). A
woman is a guardian over the household of her husband and his
children and shall be questioned about them (as to how she
managed the household and brought up the children). A slave is
a guardian over the property of his master and shall be
questioned about it (as to how he safeguarded his trust).
Beware, every one of you is a guardian and every one of you
shall be questioned with regard to his trust.”
(Sahih Muslim Book 20 Hadith No. 4496)
15. "0' people! The nations before you were
destroyed because if a noble person
committed theft, they used to leave him, but
if a weak person among them committed
theft, they used to inflict the legal punishment
on him. By Allah, if Fatimah, the daughter of
Muhammad committed theft, I will cut off her
hand!”
