We caught up with Jimmie Hill (JH), Senior Consultant, Pentasia after he spoke
at last month’s 2023 Indian Gaming Tradeshow and Convention. Jimmie’s session
took place on the opening day of the event. The panel session, titled “Missing
the mark(ets)— why it’s so important to have Native representation on
corporate boards” was well received by the audience. We asked Jimmie 4
questions to summarise the topic and points discussed on the panel.
1. What tips can you give for inclusive recruitment into senior roles?
JH:
a. Start by revisiting your recruitment process and removing any unconscious
biases that may exist in job descriptions or interview questions.
b. Develop targeted outreach programs to attract diverse candidates from
underrepresented communities, such as Native American populations.
c. Engage with organizations and educational institutions focused on fostering
diversity and inclusion to widen your talent pool.
d. Implement mentorship and sponsorship programs to help develop diverse
talent internally, creating a pipeline for senior positions.
e. Encourage open dialogue and feedback within the organization to create an
inclusive culture, where employees feel valued and empowered to grow.
2. What insights did you learn from speaking at Indian Gaming Tradeshow?
JH: Speaking at the Indian Gaming Tradeshow highlighted the importance of
understanding and respecting the cultural nuances of Native American
communities. I also learned that while there is an increased awareness of the
need for diverse representation, there is still a long way to go in achieving
meaningful change. It reinforced the need for collaboration between the gaming
industry and Native American communities to ensure equal representation and
opportunities. Hopefully, Pentasia can work to create a bridge program that acts
as an incubator for executive leadership via a tribal rotational program for
prominent board-level positions in Gaming.

3. What changes should be made to see fundamental changes on this topic?
JH: In order to see fundamental changes in Native representation on corporate
boards, we need to:
a. Advocate for policies and regulations that promote diversity and inclusion at
the board level, including diversity quotas and reporting requirements.
b. Encourage the industry to invest in the education and development of Native
American talent to create a pipeline of qualified candidates for senior roles.
c. Foster partnerships between the gaming industry and Native American
communities to ensure that industry growth benefits all parties involved.
d. Promote greater awareness and understanding of Native American culture
and history within the corporate world to create more inclusive environments.
4. Closing remarks
JH: Achieving Native representation on corporate boards is not only a matter of
social responsibility but also a strategic advantage for the gaming industry. By
fostering diversity and inclusion, we can tap into a wealth of perspectives,
experiences, and innovation that will drive sustainable growth and success. Let's
work together to create a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone.
