3. Introduction:
How it started
It was the start of a new year with
new teachers and new friends. In
the midst of exploring a fresh envi-
ronment and exploring relation-
ships, the children took notice of
the colours in and around the
classroom. After some observa-
tions and much reflection, the
teachers decided to start the jour-
ney with the colours yellow,
blue and red.

What’s in the magic box?
All Things Yellow
24 January 2011
The sight of a black flowing
fabric draped over a basket
caught the children’s atten-
tion. Everybody gathered
around this special box… and
out came yellow flowers…
and bananas… and lemons!
The flowers smelt sweet. We
noticed the yellow petals and
how soft they felt on our
cheeks. The small bananas
had yellow skin with black
patches. We got to peel the
skin ourselves, the insides
were yellow, too!

Lemon so sour!
Exploring Lemons
24 January 2011
After lunch, Emma reminded all of us that we have not
tasted the lemons yet.
So the lemons were cut into
wedges and we used our fingers
and hands to squeeze out the
lemon juice.
We tasted some of the juice
and the lemon wedges…
Oooh, sour!

and a small ball. A piece of
cloth was draped over the
basket, the children were very
excited, wondering what the
‘magic box’ will bring out

What can you do with them?
28 January 2011
Unable to contain their excitement, everybody rushed for
the ‘magic box’, taking out each yellow object to explore.
The yellow cellophane strip became a belt and sun-
glasses according to Emma and Jayden. The flowing scarf
was good for a game of ‘peak-a-boo”!

Yellow on the Projector
28 January 2011
8 February 2011
Translucent yellow shapes
star, heart, circle, square and
triangle were placed on a
projector. Kiran was amazed
at the images projected on
the wall, touching them while
Mateo moved the shapes
around on the projection
stage. It was also an opportu-
nity for Tai and Jayden to ex-
plore the workings of a pro-
jector, turning knobs, open-
ing and closing the upper
section mirror.

Hello Miss Red!
Miss Red the Hand Puppet
9 February 2011
Miss Red visited us in the Rain Tree
classroom today. We all said hello and
shook hands. Miss Red also sang a song
for us…
What is Red?
Tune: "Three Blind Mice"
Red, red, red
Red, red, red
What is red?
What is red?
Apples, cherries and me, oh my
Tomatoes to bake in a pizza pie.
Red is the color, and that is why
We love red.

Feet Painting on Bubble Wrap
9 February 2011
Large strips of bubble wrap were taped to the ground. Red
paint-filled tubs were placed nearby. Children were then in-
vited to step into the tubs and walk up and down the bub-
ble wrap.
There were a few tentative
steps in the beginning but after
a while, everybody got into it
and even stepped harder, trying
to pop the bubble wrap! There
were even some footprints on
the ground… and of course, we
couldn’t resist rubbing the
paint all over our bodies.

Taste Test: Red Guavas
Exploring Red Guavas
11 February 2011
We know a lot of red fruits like apples and strawberries. A
basket of red guavas was presented as a provocation. We
all wondered about these bell-shaped fruits. We smelled
them, rub the skin and wanted to find out if they were
yummy. For morning tea, we cut open the guavas and dis-
covered that although the skin was red the flesh was actu-
ally white! We agreed red guavas are beautiful fruits but
not everybody agreed that they tasted good…

Blue Choo-Choo Train
Constructing the Class Train
16 to 17 February 2011
After a fantastic runs with yellow and red, it was time
for us to explore the colour blue. There was a wooden
train and tracks area that the children loved very
much so we decided that a bigger train was needed in
the classroom so everyone can ride in it and that it
had to be blue!
Kiran, Harrison, Kristian, Leanne and Tai painted card-
board panels blue.
