32. Cloud Computing and Edge Computing
Image Source:
Edge Computing은 IoT, Network, Big Data, Machine Learning, Cloud
Computing

Big Data Analytics and Cloud
By leveraging the burgeoning infrastructure of the cloud, big data
analytics can deliver big benefits to business and society alike.
Case study: Apache – anticipating critical equipment failures
• Improved diagnostics and predictions
Electronic submersible pumps (ESPs) had been causing losses of
10,000 barrels a day for Apache Corporation, a US-based
independent oil and gas company. To tackle these issues, it set up a
collaborative industry effort around predictive analytics (ESP-
RIFTS) to document and quantify the locations and operating
conditions of more than 100,000 pumps. Working with Ayata, it
looked at this data and identified 40 actionable variables to improve
its ESPs. The result: reduced production losses and increased
output thanks to higher overall equipment uptime.
Case study: Disney – improving customer experiences
• Greater customization of products and services
Launched in 2014, after six years of planning and $1 billion of
investment, Disney Magic Bands are multicoloured RFID wristbands
that allow guests to make payments, manage reservations and
access hotel rooms. Linked to Disney’s guest management system,
its analytics servers and the My Magic+ app, the system allows staff
to deliver a highly personalized service: for example, by creating
customized itineraries or having pre-ordered meals ready for
collection at restaurants in the theme park. So far, the bands have
been used by more than 10 million visitors and received approval
ratings beyond 90%. They help Disney access rich user data,
allowing it to make efficiency and process improvements that have
helped Disney World increase footfall and customer spend.

putting ‘big data analytics as a service’ among the fastest-growing cloud-based services
Case study: Kensho – answering complex research queries
• Improved workforce productivity
Kensho augments human capabilities to think, learn and do by
combining big data and machine learning to analyse the impact of
real-world events on financial markets and answer complex
financial queries automatically. Kensho’s search engine
automatically categorizes events according to abstract features – a
process that takes just a few minutes. Generating a similar query
without automation could take around 40 man-hours – a significant
investment for companies whose employees are paid an average
salary of $350,000 to $500,000. Goldman Sachs is Kensho’s largest
investor and uses it to perform research work.
Case study: Schneider Electric – using the cloud to cut costs
• Improve operational efficiency
Cloud-based Box provides file-sharing, collaboration and other tools
for working with files that are uploaded to its servers. Schneider
Electric uses Box for both internal and external sharing of files
because it addresses users’ needs for external collaboration and
mobile access while giving IT centralized management and
enterprise-grade security. Schneider has roughly 67,000 users on
Box and adoption continues to increase. Currently, 20TB of
Schneider’s data is currently stored on Box – none of which was
previously accessible to IT. Schneider has been able to offload its
on-premises file servers, cutting costs by 30%.

The Internet of Things and connected devices:
making the world smarter
Case study: Jaguar Land Rover – next-generation smart cars
• Automotive
Jaguar Land Rover has introduced self-learning intelligent cars that
learn driver and passenger behaviours, needs and preferences.
Integrating with users’ mobile phones, they can change comfort
controls and entertainment choices, and offer calendar reminders
and navigation guidance. Imagine a world where Monique comes
out of the gym and heads to her car. The fitness wearable on her
wrist reports a heart rate of 120 beats per minute and a body
temperature of 102°F. The car accordingly pre-cools its inside air
and chills the seat. Because it is connected to her refrigerator at
home, the car knows she is nearly out of her favourite fitness drink.
She is notified that her vehicle is approaching a grocery store, and
the store then offers her a discount coupon on that very drink.
Case study: Livongo Health – improving lives
• Healthcare
California-based start-up Livongo Health helps users manage
diabetes. It gives them a two-way smart glucose meter that
communicates their reading in real time to a smart cloud. Analytics
provide personalized insights based on the glucose reading and the
user’s personal history. Livongo diabetes ‘educators’ are alerted if a
user’s glucose level is too high or too low, contacting the user if
necessary to offer advice.

By networking everyday objects, the Internet of Things turns them into smart devices that – if regulated
correctly – can help deliver significant benefits to many industries and society at large.
Case study: Google – connecting homes
• Electricity
In 2014, Google acquired Nest for $3.2 billion,¹⁰ signalling a move
by Google to develop a more integrated experience in the home.
Nest and Google have established partnerships with lifestyle and
home product brands that extend far beyond the original Nest
thermostat. Examples include LIFX’s smart lightbulbs, primed to
turn on at night to improve safety when a dwelling’s occupants are
out; Jawbone wristbands that use motion-sensing technology to
turn the heating on when the wearer wakes; and Mercedes-Benz
cars that communicate with the connected house to turn on the
heating when the vehicle and its occupants are 30 minutes from
home.

Case study: Otto – a self-driving truck company
• Automotive and Logistics
Recently bought by Uber for $680 million, Otto is testing self-
driving trucks on roads throughout Northern California. For now,
the robot truckers are only taking control on highways, but the goal
is a more automatized, totally functional rollout by 2020. Trucking is
a $700 billion industry in the United States, and a third of costs go
to compensating drivers. Given the size of the industry, it is likely
self-driving trucks will be on the market before self-driving cars.
Case study: Pepper – the humanoid robot

stroke or brain bleed by identifying relevant evidence in patient
records. Merge’s Marktation augments the work of physicians by
raising image-reading speeds and accuracy. It also has a cloud
application for eliminating common causes of errors in medical
imaging, and a Lesion Segmentation and Tracking Module.
Case study: BakerHostetler – ROSS, the artificially intelligent lawyer
• Professional Services
Law firm BakerHostetler recently employed its first AI lawyer, ROSS,
for its bankruptcy practice, where 50 human lawyers currently
work. Built on IBM’s cognitive computing platform Watson, ROSS is
designed to read and understand language, postulate hypotheses
when questioned, conduct research, and generate responses (along
with references and citations) to back up its conclusions. ROSS also
learns from experience, gaining speed and knowledge the more
lawyers it interacts with. It also constantly monitors current
litigation so that it can notify colleagues about recent court
decisions that may affect their cases.
