Ethan Allen Kids' TV Commercial Captures the High Energy
of Today's Youth
DANBURY, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 21, 2003--"Introducing Ethan Allen Kids. Make room for
fun!" The leading home furnishings retailer and manufacturer Ethan Allen Interiors Inc. (NYSE:
ETH) has come out to play with a high energy, fast paced, new television advertisement that uses a
unique, storyboard design to reflect custom tutus the new collections' hip styles, fun designs and
durability.
The commercial begins with a shot of a cherub faced baby girl standing in an Ethan Allen Baby
Sleigh Crib. The frame widens, opening on the pastel yellow room reflecting the essence of
innocence and the baby powder freshness of infancy. The sweet sounds of a child's piano is playing
"Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" as the baby blows kisses as if saying goodbye to babyhood.
The next frame suddenly crashes in featuring a pigtailed, freckled face little girl, full of vitality and
giggles, falling onto her bed, surrounded by her Ethan Allen Kids' Heart Quilt. The music changes
from soft and sweet to the sounds of high voltage electric guitars that give "Twinkle, Twinkle" a new
twist. Representing the collection's feminine and sporty style, the little girl, in her tutu and
sweatpants, stands on her Emma bed and defiantly pushes against the invasion of the next frame. A
pre-teen boy, seated at his Contempo workstation, holding a soccer ball, is using his feet against his
desk to press his frame into full view. When he succeeds, he then spins his chair across the room,
taking the viewers on a wild ride with him, reinforcing a strong sense of durability to the collection.
Overtaking the frame is a shot of two pre-teen boys, dreaming of rock stardom while playing on their
air guitar and drums around their PJ bunk bed. ("Introducing the brand new collection, where fun
and furniture come out to play.") A close up on each boy shows the pure joy that a room, that
stimulates youthful imaginations, can bring ("At great introductory prices"). The scene changes and
a wide shot of a teenage girl's bedroom, featuring the Gabrielle poster bed appears ("and the best
part is, its Ethan Allen") A close up shot of a tennis shoed foot pushes in the bottom drawer of an
Armoire, and the upper door opens. The girl appears in the frame, trying on a hat, dancing to the
music, blowing bubbles with her gum, while listening to an MP3 player through headphones,
illustrating the contemporary attitude and hip new designs of the new Ethan Allen Kids collection.
"Ethan Allen has been looking for ways to grow into the business of juvenile furnishings" explained
Farooq Kathwari, chairman and chief executive of Ethan Allen Inc., based in Danbury, CT. "The
importance of the TV commercial fits within the overall campaign for our new Ethan Allen Kids
collection. The designs, attitude and high energy surrounding the new line appeals to kids and fits
into their lifestyles, but 70 years of experience in the furniture industry and the quality
craftsmanship that stands behind the new line appeals to their parents."
The commercial ends with the teenager falling back on her bed, holding up the MP3 player and
pulling the cord out. The volume on the music is lowered and the end shot of the Ethan Allen Kids
logo appears with the voice-over "Ethan Allen Kids, make room for fun".
As part of a national advertising campaign, "Ethan Allen Kids" breaks nationally July 14th, coinciding
with the first week of Ethan Allen's Summer Sale (July 11th through September 1st, 2003). The
commercial is a part of a multi-tiered marketing campaign that includes a store within a store
concept as well as plans to open two individual Ethan Allen Kids stores by the end of 2003. The
current placement schedule of the ads - one 30 second and one 15 second spot - includes major
national and cable networks. The "Ethan Allen Kids" commercial was created by Grey Worldwide,
New York, in conjunction with Ethan Allen Inc. Images from the commercial are available upon
