Lessons on centrifugal pump inspection and rebuilding
1. Lessons on Centrifugal Pump Inspection and Rebuilding
The origin of centrifugal pump dates back 150 years and even more. The energy from the pump
is converted to potential and kinetic energy using an impeller. The pumps are used to circulate
freshwater and seawater to cool the engine. There are number of pumps used aboard a ship and
centrifugal pump is one among them. It is important for mechanics to learn how to install,
inspect, repair and reassemble a centrifugal pump.
Overview on centrifugal pump
The first centrifugal pump was formulated in around the middle of 1800. It was crudely formed
during the earlier stage. The first design was founded by John Appold in the year 1851. He was
the first one to use curved blades instead of impeller. Here the pump is used to convert
mechanical to kinetic energy. The energy is transferred to fluid with the pressure. There are two
main parts in the pump; these are the impeller and the volute. The impeller is responsible for
converting mechanical to kinetic energy; meanwhile the volute converts the energy to pressure.
Through the nozzle of the suction pipe the fluid enters the pump. The fluid is drawn to the eye of
the impeller found in the center. The fluid is spun tangentially as the centrifugal force moves
outward. A low pressure area is created by the curved blades at the eye of the impeller that draws
more fluids through the suction nozzle. Centrifugal pump rebuilding is done when there is a
vibration or leaking seals.
Centrifugal pump maintenance and rebuilding
Disconnect from the electrical circuit before starting the inspection process. Once the pump
supply is locked it is ready to be inspected, close the valves, hand wheels, chain and suction
nozzle. Now open the suction portion and drain the valves of excess water. Once this is done
open the pipe joints with care but only ensuring after the pump is drained off. Now fix the
shackle to the pad eye located above the pump and the chain block. While doing this ensure the

the casing and coupling.
The motor supply cables have to be disconnected. The cables have to be tapped using insulating
tape. Using the chain block lift the motor after connecting to the sling and shackle. Now the
motor can be laid on the side. This helps to protect the surface of the machine against damage.
External fittings like the pressure gauge, cooling pipe, air cock, oil reservoirs have to be
disconnected from the pump casing. The cover has to be removed and the old gasket has to be
scrapped off. A new gasket has to be assembled. The impeller and the shaft can be lifted out and
the impeller can be dismantled. The gland can be removed and placed for rebuilding.
Centrifugal pump rebuilding requires proper dismantling. The above steps have to be followed
properly to avoid snags later.
