 In what ways did economic conditions
and development in the arts and
entertainment help create the
reputation of the 1920’s as the
Roaring Twenties?
Thesis
 The reputation of the 1920’s as the Roaring Twenties
was created because of the seemingly endless
economic boom, as well as the development of art
like with the Jazz Age, and the Harlem Renaissance.
Economic Conditions
 The end of WWI and low tax policies caused an
economic boom
 Return to laissez-faire economics
 Little to no government regulation of big business
 Anti-trust laws ignored
 Consumer spending was at an all time high
 Credit
 Mass production made wages high and prices low
 Assembly line
 Advertising
 Conspicuous consumption
 Buying things to show how much you have
Economic Conditions
 The Stock Market
 Bull market
prices rising
 Speculation
Buying stocks for a quick profit; drove prices up
 Buying on the margin
Paying a small percentage of a stock’s price as a
down payment and borrowing the rest
 No government regulation
Arts and Entertainment
 Technology expanded mass entertainment
 “Talkies” propelled the birth of Hollywood and movie stars
 Radio – music and sports
 Jazz Age
 “The chimes had struck sex o’clock in America”
 Flappers
 Literature
 Post-war disillusionment
