Cuban-American singer Gloria Estefan and actor and singer-songwriter Paul Williams on the
weekend here celebrated the 40th anniversary of the 1974 Brian De Palma film "The Phantom of the
Paradise."
The tribute to the feature film, a rock opera version of "Phantom of the Opera" and written by
Gaston Leroux, was held at midnight Saturday in the Art Cinema Theater in Coral Gables, in the
heart of the Greater Miami metropolitan area, by showing the film and a forum headed by Estefan
and Williams, who starred in it and was the songwriter for its soundtrack.
Estefan acknowledged that she has been a great fan of the film since it came out 40 years ago and
especially of its music, which was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe award.
After the tribute, Estefan on Sunday posted on her Twitter account a photo in which she appears
with Williams and scriptwriter Tracey Jackson, along with the message "So thrilled to be able to
spend time with these great human beings!"
The tribute was organized by the Secret Celluloid Society, created by Estefan's son, Nayib Estefan,
to screen cult movie classics, including the work of De Palma, who also directed "Scarface" in 1983
and "The Untouchables" in 1987, among other iconic films.
"The Phantom of the Paradise" is a terror musical that tells the tale of how disfigured songwriter
Winslow Leach, played by William Finley, sells his soul to and ultimately takes revenge on a satanic
music magnate (Williams) after the latter steals one of his compositions.
