How to Install Mouldings
1. How to Install Mouldings
It is obvious that the interior of your home is more important than the exterior because that is where you work,
live, sleep, relax, raise your children and make precious memories. Therefore, the interior of your house should
not only be appealing and beautiful but it should also be comfortable. You will be surprised to find out what
a shocking difference you can make with new mouldings and millwork on your ceilings, staircases and walls.
Mouldings around a door or window can also be installed to beautify your house.
Mouldings are typically available in wood, pine or oak and come in a wide range of different designs and sizes.
Whether you are painting or staining the mouldings, the installation process is the same. While several homes
use drywall in order to add the finishing touches to the interior, mouldings offer a decorative element which can
be incorporated into the overall interior design of the home. The installation of mouldings can be done with only
a few tools and basic knowledge of carpentry.
First with the help of a tape measure, determine the exterior dimensions of the door or window opening. These
measurements will be the inside measurements of your mouldings. You may want to measure about ¼ inch
bigger or smaller, depending on whether or not you want to leave a reveal. Next, using a miter saw cut your
mouldings at an angle of 45 degrees. The inside measurements will be the measurement that you took. This
will measure to the short ends of the piece of mouldings.
Hold the moulding level to the proposed treatment area. A level is not necessarily required as you may want to
have a good look at the trim so that it is even around the window or door frame. Make use of finishing nails and
an air nailer if needed and secure the mouldings in place. Space the nails at a distance of 18 inches from each
other. You should drive the nails along the inside as well as outside of the mouldings approximately ½ an inch
from the edge to avoid cracking. Fix the corners of the mouldings together from the outside edges. You may be
required to push one moulding in to make sure that they meet properly.
