Raising the flag for Armed Forces Day
Date of Release: Thu 18 June, 2015
North West Leicestershire District Council is joining venues across the country in raising a special
flag to support Armed Forces Day.
Councillor John Bridges, Chairman of the Council and the Deputy Lieutenant of Leicestershire Major
R D F Bream will host the ceremony to raise the Armed Forces Day flag at the Council Offices in
Coalville at 10.30am on Monday 22 June.
The flag will be flown until Monday 29 June, in sync with many other flags across UK.
Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June day is an opportunity for the nation to show its support for
the men and women who make up the armed forces community - from currently serving troops to
service families, and from veterans to cadets.
This is the second Armed Forces Day marked by North West Leicestershire District Council since the
signing of its Armed Forces Community Covenant - a public pledge to support the district's armed
forces community.
The council's dedicated armed forces champion is Councillor Alison Smith MBE, Deputy Leader and
Portfolio Holder for Community Services. She said: "We do numerous things throughout the year to
celebrate and support our armed forces as we believe it's important to recognise the work that they
do. I would like to encourage members of the community to join us at the flag raising on Monday, or
join in with one of the many events being held on Armed Forces Day itself."
A whole host of events have been planned around the country for Armed Forces Day itself and the
weeks leading up to it, with businesses and communities showing their support.
Find a list of events on the Armed Forces Day website.
