Open Innovation and Open Banking

  1. The tenth most cited psychologist of the 20th century is Abraham Maslow (Haggbloom et al., 2002). He has impacted a wide variety of industries including management, education, psychology and theology. In 1943 he published ‘A Theory of Human Motivation’ in which he first presented his ‘Hierarchy of Needs Theory’. He is famed for this framework which describes human motivation in terms of needs and the priorities assigned to those needs. It is founded on the most basic of human interactions, however the digital age has altered human communication patterns and is redefining our social norms. Undoubtedly, our technological advancements are more rapid that our cultural conventions are evolving. So how does digital technology support individuals needs and motivation as defined by Maslow? The 'Hierarchy of Needs Theory' divides motivation into five different levels of needs to be satisfied: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization, see Figure 1. Maslow suggests that as people satisfy a need on one level, they progress and focus on the next level of need as motivation for behavior. The lower level of this hierarchy is considered to be an unsatisfied individual and every drive is related to the state of satisfaction or dissatisfaction of other drivers (Project Management Skills, 2017).

However, according to the World Economic Forum Digital Media and Society report, innovations in technology and digital media have altered 'the very fabric of daily life' (World Economic Forum, 2016). Additionally, in July 2016 the United Nations declared that online freedom is a 'human right' and issued a declaration. The resolution indicates the importance of: 'applying a comprehensive human rights-based approach when providing and expanding access to the internet and for the internet to be open, accessible and nurtured'. Already in 2018 there were 3.7 million searches on Google, 4.3 million videos viewed on YouTube and 187 million emails sent every Internet minute, see Figure 2. The phenomenal number of Internet users at any one time can be seen via the website Internet Live Stats (currently an incredible 3,838, 209, 810 individuals online). Ironically, you may find yourself caught up in the Internet, at the expense of getting enough sleep.

Mentre le imprese si affannano nel competere con strategie improntate all’efficienza, per sopravvivere e uscire dalla crisi economica globale, questa ha superato il decimo anno di durata e il mercato ha fatto in tempo a recepire un intero salto generazionale. È cambiato il mercato, sono mutati i bisogni dei clienti. I modelli gestionali ai quali siamo stati educati come manager e imprenditori sono ancora adeguati a consentirci di dominare la complessità di una domanda che evolve superando il linguaggio, i processi e la cultura che avevano permesso alle imprese di funzionare per decenni? Come adeguarli al mutare di una domanda che cambia per natura e ruolo nella relazione fra azienda e cliente? La trasformazione digitale ha modificato i modelli di comunicazione fra gli esseri umani e sta ridefinendo le nostre norme sociali. Indubbiamente, i nostri progressi tecnologici sono più rapidi rispetto all'evoluzione delle nostre convenzioni culturali. In che misura questa evoluzione sta modificando le priorità dei bisogni dei nostri clienti? Quanto questo cambiamento sta spostando il baricentro della relazione fra aziende e clienti? Come si devono porre le aziende nel gestire la relazione con clienti che non possono più accogliere passivamente quanto prodotto e venduto? La sfida insita nell'evoluzione di tale relazione ha implicazioni profonde nella trasformazione delle imprese che, per quanto innescata da quella digitale, si fa culturale, organizzativa, umana, Mentre il marketing delle imprese consolidate si scervella per qualificare e classificare il comportamento dei Millenial (Gen Y), per poter ridefinire il posizionamento di mercato in modo coerente con il mutare della domanda che da emergente si è fatta consolidata, bussa alle porte una nuova generazione di consumatori, che timidamente iniziamo ad ascoltare. La generazione Z è ormai alle porte. La generation Z non ricorda un'epoca in cui internet non esisteva ed è ultraconnessa. Il Gen Z preferisce le interazioni faccia a faccia sul posto di lavoro, e si aspetta di lavorare di più rispetto ai gruppi del passato. Il Gen Z è anche la generazione più eterogenea (49% non bianca) e considera l'uguaglianza razziale come una questione di primaria importanza. Infine, il Gen Z è forse una delle generazioni più pratiche, che valorizza principi come il risparmio di denaro e l'ottenimento di posti di lavoro stabili. Ci possono già essere Gen Z-er sul posto di lavoro; o lo saranno presto. Come possiamo ascoltare e comprendere questa domanda di mercato? Una soluzione sostenibile consiste nel rendere le aziende porose, aprendole al contributo della nuova impresa emergente che, per ragioni di necessità, trasforma i propri limiti di risorse in attenzione spietata alla nuova domanda di mercato. Le startup sono molto più che un circo. Sono, a collaborarci, una grande occasione per ascoltare e comprendere rapidamente le mutate esigenze della domanda di mercato emergente, in modo sostenibile.
