1. Introducing….
Michelle Turner
Michelle is originally from Mobile and has lived in the area for most of her
life. Losing her mother in 2008 after a lengthy battle with brain cancer was
very much a life-changing event in Michelle's life as she, being the primary
caregiver, was devastated by her loss. Having no children, Michelle
searched for purpose in life with that search leading her to animal rescue.
Within weeks, she knew this was her true calling and her life since has been
devoted to this worthy cause. After volunteering in several different areas of the Animal Rescue
Foundation (ARF), Michelle ran for, and was elected, it's President in 2009. Bringing with her a
brand new Board of Directors, this group quickly settled in and went to work creating and
implementing many lifesaving programs. They also turned their attention to ARF's poor
financial state and in just a few short years, touted many accomplishments culminating in
the purchase of a new 8,000 sq.ft. facility in early 2011.
Michelle’s inspiration comes mainly in the form of the four legged variety. “Each animal we
rescue has a story to tell and we do our best to be that voice for them. To watch one grow and
flourish under our care (physically, mentally and emotionally) is a true inspiration for me.
Moreover, I am eternally in awe of our team of volunteers who give all they can and then give
just a little more to help make a difference in our community.” Turner says.
It is Michelle’s dream that one day, animal homelessness, abuse and neglect will become a thing
of the past therefore eradicating the need for unnecessary euthanasia in our shelters. That
spay/neuter laws will be passed, backyard breeders regulated and that puppy mills will
be banned. I can only hope there is a time when our future generations will look back and
acknowledge the small part that I, along with my fellow 'warriors', played in making this dream a
reality.
Michelle has distinguished herself as a member of the inaugural class of “Herstory of Mobile”, a
project of the Museum of Mobile recognizing women who have made outstanding contributions
to the social, economic and cultural heritage of the Gulf Coast region.
In addition to her position as President of ARF, Michelle also sits on the Mobile County Animal
Shelter’s Rescue Panel and is Co-Chairman of the Mobile County Animal Shelter Advisory
Committee.
Michelle lives in West Mobile and has several rescue animals of her own.
