13. Delivering Business Value Delivering business value is the only thing that matters Don’t focus on: Principles Buzzwords Processes Convincing People What’s wrong with “the other way” Focus on: Collaborating with your business stakeholders Prioritising business value Getting things done, in a sustainable way Being transparent

Editor's Notes
Startup new processes/no processesNew people old baggage! No legacy SystemsHeaps of legacy thinking
So many new people ALL the time = new ideas and lots of changesNeed to focus on delivering the business value rather than our own techniques or fail
Big Portfolio of very diverse projects means no 1 way to do thingsSome projects Agi-FallSome projects AgileSome projects Water-GileAll projects deliver business value with:Collaboration/Availability/Transparency (see next page)Lean principlesTest driven developmentContinuous deployment (as a goal)
This is how the skeptics see usReligous wars only guarantee failureFocusing on the specifics is missing the pointI became the poster boy for Agile rather than the poster boy for Delivery
Once we made better delivery of business value the point and:I stepped away from SDM/Agile coachingI stopped using the term “Agile”I started to talk about delivering value all the timePeople took notice:I was no longer dealing with doubters and skeptics but customers with issues I could solveWhen we delivered it spoke a thousand times louder than my best argumentsPeople started to relax and forgot about the differences and focussed on working together
We thought we could do it all at once and overnight...ooopsWe iterated our agile implementation in order to set expectations properlyWe stopped worrying about being Agile and started planning deliveryOnce we stepped back from ”Agile” we discovered that people were keen to learn and improve but not so keen to be told their methods are wrong...we explained that we are just re-examining the things they already do not implementing new things and they agreed all things can be improved .
I can’t stress this enough...talk less...do more...fail fast...iterate!
Don’t ruin your success by saying I told you so...Accept that your success is in your success not in somebody telling you “well done” or “you were right” Eventually some of our biggest sceptics came to us for help with card walls, standups and cont deployment tools (hey just the fact that Cont Dep was on the menu was a win)
