Anatomy Review is an online learning resource used primarily by Warwick University medical
students to revise for their OSCE examinations. The website was created and developed by medical
students, for medical students in December 2008 and has been available as a learning tool since.
The aim of the website is to address a high demand for upper and lower limb anatomical models
during revision periods at the medical school. The website is a tool that facilitates student’s anatomy
learning wherever they choose to study and is not dependent on the availability of models. This was
achieved by creating an online library of high quality photographs of the models in highest demand
by students. Labels were provided for each image and appropriate clinical questions and answers
were added to give students an insight into the level of knowledge that would be expected in their
examinations. Further, information provided in Anatomy Review was checked by faculty prior to
official release, which was just in time for the 2007 cohort’s examinations.
Since the release of Anatomy Review, we have received positive feedback online and in person from
fellow students who have made use of the resource. In addition, the online nature of our resource
allowed easy audit of how Anatomy Review is being used via survey. The results have shown that
students not only used the website for OSCE revision but for written assessment and throughout
their musculoskeletal module too. Students tended to use the website at home rather than at
university. Interestingly, students used the resource due to a lack of time rather than an
unavailability of models.
During the month of June – shortly before examinations, we were thrilled to find that Anatomy
Review was viewed 4, 920 times! In figure 1 we can see that the majority of page views occurred the
weekend before examinations started.

As a result of the positive comments towards the site we decided to submit an abstract to The
British Association of Clinical Anatomists’ Summer Scientific Meeting 2010. We all felt that a short
oral presentation on the website would give members of other institutions an idea of the work we
had done and insight into how to go about creating similar resources at their universities. Our
abstract was accepted and I was invited to present the project at Glasgow University on the 21st
of
July 2010.
Reflection
As director of the Anatomy Review website I have gained technical skills in leadership, website
building, teaching and applying for grants. In order to complete the project and pass my exams I had
to be well organised, efficient and flexible with my time.
The financial support of the Dean’s Fund enabled me to present this work at an international
conference to an audience of well-known anatomists and surgeons. This experience has helped
further develop my confidence in public speaking and networking – necessary skills in medicine
today.
In addition, by attending the conference I gained knowledge in a broad range of subjects from
medical education to head and neck anatomy. The presentations and posters I viewed provided
useful ideas for future study and many will directly influence my clinical practice.
