2. Problem Statement
To measure the service quality of the car
maintenance procedure as there is always
doubt in customer’s mind that what has been
done by the service station?
Whether we should follow the periodic service
schedule specified by manufacturer or not
3. Introduction
Maintenance can be described as the
activities required to conserve as nearly as
long as possible the original condition of an
vehicle while compensating for normal wear
and tear.
A vehicle service is a maintenance
procedure carried out at a set time interval or
after the particular distance vehicle has
travelled.
4. Six Steps in an Automotive Repair Job
Servicing Jobs vary from simple to difficult. No
repair job requires more than six steps. These are:
1.Measuring
2.Disassembling
3.Machining
4.Installing new, rebuilt, or serviced parts
5.Reassembling
6.Adjusting
6. Changes in material characteristics
Changes in material is also an example of
wear
Example:
Absorption of water by the brake fluid
(hygroscopic)
Hazard Potential:
Brake fluid in the brake caliper is heated up
under certain driving conditions.
Bubbles of water vapour form in the brake
fluid.
Water vapour bubbles burst under the brake
pressure.
Sufficient brake pressure can no longer
rebuilt up.

7. Resource
Resource used to refer
to capability of fulfilling
a specified function
Resource Capacity is
reduced by wear
Maintenance interval
is the period or
distance between
maintenance services.
8. Steady or anticipatory style of
driving
Sportier style of driving
Low rate of resource consumption
High rate of resource consumption
Resource Consumption
10. Vehicle Engines
Initial distance set(ASSYST) :
15000Km
Number of engine Starts, Sub-
divided into Warm & Cold starts
Driving at high Revs= High rate of
resource consumption
Driving at low Revs= Low rate of
resource consumption
High engine load:
High Mechanical load on all moving
parts of the engine
Increased the depositing of
combustion products in engine oil
11. Types Of Service Maintenance
Mercedes-Benz having following different types of
Maintenance:
Time-based Maintenance
It’s only used when vehicle driven seldom
Material aging outweighs wear through use
Distance-based Maintenance
Vehicle driven frequently
Degree of wear is recorded when the vehicle is moving(not in
case of stationary or used as an engine)
Customer’s Request Maintenance
Independent of intervals
13. TASK OF ASSYST
It’s a computerized engine oil service system which
works based on the different principles of maintenance.
Measurement of resource
consumption
Calculation of the optimum service
intervals.
14. DISPLAY
A message in the multi-function display
informs the driver or passenger
whenever service is due.
15. ASSYST PLUS
It’s an advanced version of
ASSYST
Also give information
about :
Brake pad wear
Interval for the brake
fluid replacement
Interval for Spark plug
replacement
16. STRUCTURE OF ASSYST AND ASSYST
PLUS
ASSYST ASSYST PLUS
ICMC : Instrument Cluster with
Maintenance Computer
MII : Maintenance interval indicator
CGW: Central Gate Way(ASSYST PLUS)
18. ASSYST DATA SOURCES
ASSYST Services :
Engine data from the
engine control module
Data on distance travelled
from dynamic handling
control system.
22. Inspection Points
Other Inspections can be carried out by the
Service Inspection List provided by Mercedes-
Benz. Remaining inspection part of the vehicle
are following :
Basic Service, Electronics Checks, Engine
Compartment, Transmission.
Brake System.
Additional check points: Age/mileage-wise,
whichever comes earlier.
Different inspection sheet for different models as per
Mercedes-Benz Norms
23. Diagnosis
Start diagnosis by connecting the Star Xentary
and get the information in the form of Initial Quick
test report on Tough Book
26. Now after replacement of oil filter according the engine
capacity and by MB guidance fill engine oil of
specification MB 229.3 and grade of SAE5W-40
and finally check the amount value of engine oil by
dipstick
27. So as per service schedule or request we will go further
which includes other fluids and parameters to perform
the service process at workshop. Some of the fluids are
following:
1.Brake oil(DOT 4 Plus MB spec. 331.0)
2.Coolant top-up
3.Windshield washer bottle top-up(with MB
recommended fluid)
28. Documentation
These are the following documents needed for
completion of workshop process :
Material requisition form
Estimate Form
Tire Sheet
Battery Report
Service Check sheet
AQT report
Initial Quick test report
Instrument Cluster value report
Service Reset confirmation print out
Final Quick Test report
29. Send the car for final inspection and hence service
completed
