Browser Support & Device Recommendations – 2015 4Q
The latest Device and Browser Support updates, courtesy of MCD Partners.
Browser support recommendations for desktop and mobile browsers are constantly changing and close attention should be paid to updates as the slightest change can significantly impact user experience. On a quarterly basis, MCD Partners tracks the use of stable releases of browsers, operating systems, and devices for the general U.S. population, identifying the current share of the user base and potential velocity for large-scale adoption of new and obsolesce of old platforms.
The device and browser support recommendations outlined in this report are based on the general U.S. consumer market; with a couple of noted exceptions. An individual project’s browser support requirements should be identified based on measurement analytics for the target site and inform the design and development specifications throughout the project.

2. Overview
On a quarterly basis, MCD Partners tracks the use of stable releases of browsers,
operating systems, and devices for the general U.S. population, identifying the
current share of the user base and potential velocity for large-scale adoption of new
and obsolesce of old platforms.
The following table is our recommended platform support policy. Both velocity and
lifecycle are factored. Platforms that fit into these categories change regularly, some
faster than others. Full and partial support types are defined after the table.

All features and functions display and operate as designed and specified.

Partial Functionality
Core functionality works correctly, but may have some display errors. Functional errors may
occur but will not impinge on core functionality. Special features (e.g., overlays or advanced
animation) may not function properly or at all.
It is important to note that as a new stable release of a browser, device, or operating system
moves into the “Upcoming” category, it does not necessarily displace any other supported
platform. Conversely, a platform in the “Experimental” category may never move into the
mainstream environment. We also monitor certain platforms that have been “stuck” in the
experimental group for some time but have a high potential to suddenly break out and become
an Upcoming or even Modern platform.
5. A note on Support Type Definitions
Project Specific Support
The platform support recommendations outlined in this report are based on the general U.S.
consumer market; with a couple of noted exceptions. An individual project’s platform support
requirements should be identified based on measurement analytics for the target site and
inform the design and development specifications throughout the project.

Add full support of Samsung Galaxy S5 on Android v5.0 and Android v5.1.
As of writing this report, the market penetration for Kindle Fire and Kindle
Fire HD is not available. As per Stat Counter Global Stats, in the USA,
Amazon has 1.57% market share. At this point, we recommend partial
support of Kindle family.

16. Desktop (Macintosh Only)
The Mac 10.11 market share has been growing and is now at 2.99%. We expect it
to reach our 3% full support in the upcoming quarter and, thus, recommend full
support at this time. Mac 10.9 has dropped below 1% market share; as a result,
support is dropped for this quarter.

Browser Type Analysis
The following tables and charts highlight desktop browser types
and versions with 1% or more of total sessions. For detailed
information on desktop browser versions, refer to the Browser
Version Analysis section later in this document.
21. Browser Type Analysis
We compared browser use for January 2015 to December 2015 by general market browser
share, as reported by w3schools, and noted some interesting differences. Chrome use is
significantly higher among the browsers in the general market as it outpaces Firefox and Safari.
Also note the very large difference in Safari – a browser primarily used in iOS devices.
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
21
25. Browser Version Analysis
We’re seeing the slow deflation of the IE 10 and 9 browsers largely due to Microsoft
auto updates. Hence we do not recommend support of IE 9 and IE 10 in the current
quarter as usage is 1% or under in the last quarter. There is a possibility 2016 will
continue to see large corporate users upgrading directly to Microsoft Edge, Firefox,
or Chrome.
As of writing this report, Microsoft Edge market penetration is gradually gaining.
However, as usage was under 1% in the last quarter, we do not recommend
support at this time. We will continue to monitor this browser for possible inclusion
in upcoming quarter
25
28. Firefox has considerable competition from Safari and Chrome. We see Firefox version 40
and 41 dropping sharply from its release date to now.
Little more than a month after the release of Firefox 43, Mozilla released Firefox 44 on
January 26th, 2016. Firefox 44 market penetration is less than 1%; therefore, we will
monitor Firefox 44 in the coming quarters for possible inclusion.
Firefox
28
33. Since Chrome 44 market share dropped below 1% last quarter, support has been dropped.
Google released Chrome 48 version on January 20, 2015. Currently, Chrome 48 market
share is less than 1% but growing, therefore, we will monitor Chrome 48 in the coming
quarters for possible inclusion.

42. Android Device Breakdown
Below are the top Android devices by market share as of December 2015.
The Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, and S5 are the favorites
42
43. The Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5 are now listed in the top Android phone list. At 5.7%
and 10.1%, we recommend continuing full support of Samsung Galaxy S4 and S5.
According to appbrain.com10, Galaxy S3 has market share of 3.9%. As a result, we
recommend full support of this device. It is worth monitoring in 2016, as there is a
possibility by the end of the current quarter to see an overwhelming majority of people
opting to use Samsung Galaxy S6.
As of writing this report the market share for Galaxy S6 is approximately 1%
yet slowly gaining market share. Although this share falls below our recommended
support level we will continue to monitor this device for possible inclusion in upcoming
quarters.

46. Android Tablet Type Breakdown
http://gs.statcounter.com/#tablet-vendor-US-quarterly-201504-201504-bar
Over the past year, the Android tablet market has seen major changes. As per State
Counter Global Stats, the Samsung vendor takes top market share while Amazon is
second with Google coming in third. At this point, we recommend full support of the
Samsung Galaxy tablet and partial support for Google Nexus 7 tablet.

49. iOS Operating System Analysis
http://gs.statcounter.com/#tablet-vendor-US-quarterly-201504-201504-bar
As illustrated, iOS 9 continues to dominate market share of mobile and tablet operating
systems against iOS 8 and 7. Note that iOS 8.x and iOS 7.x usage is gradually moving down
to just over 11% and 4%, respectively. We continue to recommend full support for these
operating systems. However, also note that iOS 6.x market share has fallen below 1%. At
0.40% we do not recommend support for this operating system at this time.
As of the writing of this report, iOS 5.x and iOS 6.x are less than 1% market penetration
and below our recommended support policy.

http://david-smith.org/iosversionstats/
Over the past year, the iPhone market has seen major changes. David-Smith.org
completed a study to determine which iPhone devices are seeing the most success in
terms of usage. This pie chart shows iPhone 6 with top market share while iPhone 5s is
second with iPhone 6s coming in third. As a result, we will continue to support iPhone 5s
and iPhone 6 in the current quarter. Since iPhone 6+ has a market share of 8.60% we
recommend supporting this device.

included.
