Ahisaun Disability Foundation
Funding Request for Car Purchase
Background / Organisational Profile of Ahisaun
Ahisaun was founded in the year 2000 by Fr. Adrian ola Duli from Flores Indonesia. Ahisaun means “The light of Friendship”. Ahisaun works to promote and advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. It also provides practical training and assistance to those in marginalized areas in the districts in accordance with our vision and mission.
Vision:
Young people with disabilities have a great talent, which should be respected and developed by training and transfer of skills.
Mission:
,[object Object]
Raising public awareness in order that people with a disability are appreciated and accepted in the community.
Helping people with a physical disability to achieve their best through providing training and the development of their skills.
Appreciating peoples’ creativity and this is done through a number of activities; developing thinking skills, hands on activities such as sewing, handicrafts, vocal training and other activities like meditation.Ahisaun recently received funding from Embassy of Japan and from donors in Australia to construct a new training and accommodation facility in Dili. In the new facilities Ahisaun accommodates approximately 20 people with disabilities.
Ahisaun also has 50 members with disabilities that live in the districts. Most of them are students. In accordance with Ahisaun’s mission, Ahisaun supports its members with disabilities to access education, from Primary school right up to the University.
The specific Ahisaun programs and activities that exist now for members include: education, computer course, music, handicrafts, agriculture and composting.
Ahisaun’s goal is to continue to grow in its sustainability. Ahisaun has a land in the districts that has started to provide vegetables and food for Ahisaun members and these initiatives will continue to be strengthened in the future.
Contact Information:
Ahisaun Disability Foundation
Aimutin Comoro, Dili, Timor Leste
Director: Mario Cardoso
E-mail:mariocardoso17@yahoo.com
Phone:+670 7280023
Secretary:Angelino Benevides
Email:benevides20@yahoo.co.id
Phone:+670 7245837
Project Description:
Ahisaun Disability Foundation requests funding support to purchase a car that will help it to service the needs of its members (people with a disability) in Timor Leste. The preferred car type is an All wheel drive ute with an open tray in the back.
Prefered Make and Model: Toyota Hilux
A well maintained second hand Toyota Hilux in Timor Leste can be purchased for US $15,000.
This car has a reliable track record and has an easily accessible supply of spare parts and service options in Timor Leste.
This type of car has been assessed as most suitable as it will be used to visit people with a disability in remote districts areas and to access Ahisaun’s project sites in the rural communities. The car will also be used to transport agricultural produce from land in the rural districts to supply food for Ahisaun members and to transport construction materials to support future building projects.
Current Problems:
Ahisaun currently does not have a car that is capable of driving outside of Dili into the districts and rural communities. This is a significant problem and limitation on Ahisaun’s ability to meet the needs of its young people with a disability in Timor Leste.
At the moment Ahisaun is significantly limited in its ability to:
Transport food from its agricultural lands to its members in Dili;
Effectively manage and monitor its projects outside of Dili;
Provide effective access to medical treatment and health services for its members;
Offer training and learning opportunities to disadvantaged young people with a disability in the districts; and
Expand its services and training centre into districts where people with a disability are in greatest need.
Objectives:
The purchase of a car will help Ahisaun to achieve three main objectives:
Improve the access to essential services and facilities for young people with a disability;
Increase the sustainability of Ahisaun Foundation through facilitating much better and more frequent access to Ahisaun’s food security and income generation projects; and
Extend its services and training opportunities for marginalised young people with a disability into the districts and rural communities of Timor Leste.
Expected Results & Benefits:
Ahisaun cares for approximately 20 people with a disability at its accommodation and training facility in Dili and provides support for many more members that live in the districts of Timor Leste.
The availability of a car will help to facilitate:
Improved access to health services and medical treatment for people with a disability; and
Participation of people with a disability in community events and activities, such as the Dili marathon Fun Run, which helps to empower members and challenges community perspections about people with a disability.
Ahisaun has land on which it has set up agricultural projects in Manaleu-Metinaro (30km from Dili), Hatubuilico (95km) and in the future – Kukoa Gleno (35km). These projects are designed to create a stable, secure and cost effective supply of food for the Ahisaun members that are housed and cared for at Ahisaun’s Dili accommodation and training facility.
A car will provide the following benefits:
Allow regular visits to monitor and cultivate these agricultural lands, which will increase harvest yields;
Enable the harvested crops to be transported from the fertile rural districts to Dili, where Ahisaun members are based; and
This will directly support the improved nutrition, health and educational prospects of Ahisaun’s young people with a disability.
Ahisaun has many members living in the districts that are in need of support and training. And there are many more people with a disability that as yet are provided with no support and no opportunities for their future.
A car will help enable Ahisaun to:
Provide better services to its members in the districts and to build stronger relationships with their families;
Bring training opportunities to the districts and help disabled young people in marginalised communities to develop their confidence, self esteem and life skills; and
Build a new training centre in the districts and run training workshops there for young people with a disability to meet the needs of those in more remote and disadvantaged parts of the country.
Beneficiaries:
Ahisaun members living and attending school in Dili – approximately 20 young people with a disability;
Ahisaun members living and attending school in the districts – approximately 50 people;
The families of Ahisaun members;
People with a disability in the districts that as yet have not had access to opportunities for education, training and skills development; and
Through the advocacy and increased participation of Ahisaun members in community events, all people with a disability in Timor will benefit from Ahisaun’s work to challenge and change community perceptions.
Maintenance Plan:
Ahisaun’s experience and advice from local mechanics is that, given the local rugged conditions, it is important to service the car at least every 6 months. Ahisaun therefore intends to follow this advice and have the car serviced twice a year. Ahisaun will also undertake its own regular upkeeps and monitor things like water, coolant and oil levels.
Budget:
The market price for a well maintained second hand Toyota Hilux in Timor Leste is US$15,000. Ahisaun would also like to request funding support to help it meet its maintenance and service costs for the first year of the car’s operation.
Ahisaun is implementing new income generation projects and continuing to build upon existing projects, which will increase its sustainable income and ability to fund its car expenses. A car will actually greatly assist Ahisaun to fully realize these projects and generate a greater income stream. In the interim period, Ahisaun would appreciate financial support to meet its maintenance and service costs in the first year of the car’s operation.
Table – Total Funding for Purchase Cost & 1 year Service & Maintenance Costs
ItemPrice (USD)1Purchase Cost of Car$15,0002Service (6 monthly interval) x 2$6003Repairs & parts replacement$400Total Funding$16,000
Ahisaun Bank Account Details:
Account name: Ahisaun FoundationBank Name: Bank MandiriBank Address: Avenda Presidente Nicolau Lobato, Colmera, Dili, Timor Leste
Account No:        601-00-0032064-1SWIFT No:           BMRIIDJA
