Editor's Notes
First, we have unparalleled access.
Nowhere else in our region do you have a centrally-located, urban downtown area with stunning views of our nation’s capitol.
We are uniquely situated on the Potomac, and because we don’t have the same building height restrictions that DC has, we can actually take advantage of those spectacular water views of Washington, the monument corridor and beyond.
We also play a key role in our region’s transportation system. In addition to fantastic bike trails, multiple bus systems and easy access to Reagan National Airport, we are also a central metro hub for Virginia, MD and DC, with three lines converging at our station including the new Silver line to Tyson’s.
And if like me, paddle boarding or kayaking is your thing, it’s a short walk across the Key bridge to Georgetown’s boathouses.
Second, Rosslyn is a center for global business.
In Rosslyn, we have a strong base of the consulting class and innovation economy - so we have high-growth industries, from startups to fortune 500 businesses headquartered right here in Rosslyn.
As you may have noticed, we are truly coming unto our own with retail.
Rosslyn had the honor of opening just the second Target Express on the East Coast last October.
The urban format of our store provides everything you need in an quick stop with an easy-to-navigate layout including
groceries,
alcohol,
home/housewares
and health/beauty.
Bistro 360 and Heavy Seas really got the ball rolling for us, and this past year we opened 3 new full-service dining options.
First, Kona, pictured here, has the BEST sushi, and their indoor/outdoor bar is phenomenal, especially now that the spring weather is here -it’s the perfect spot for a nice happy hour drink or al fresco dinner.
And if you missed our Cinco de Mayo Beer Garden last week, don’t worry, for authentic Mexican food just head over to the brand new, full service Pancho Villa which will be opening in the next few months.
Adding to our restaurant block in upper Rosslyn, Barley Mac just opened last month.
Owned by the same dream team that runs Don Tito and A-Town, the tavern feel of Barley Mac paired with the classic American cooking and craft cocktails – just written up in the Washington Post - can’t be beat.
After this presentation we’ll have some of their experts doing bourbon tastings during the networking session.
In addition to our recently opened restaurants, the pending completion of JBG’s Central Place will bring an additional 45,000 square feet of new retail in 2017.
Supplementing the new retail, the gorgeous plaza and Spanish steps are also functional. Next spring you can look forward to farmers markets, concerts and other community events at this lively plaza conveniently located right above our metro station.
As I mentioned, Rosslyn is a global center for business. The BID is proud to serve as a connector and resource for our businesses.
Since last year’s City Social, new businesses include:
•Promontory Interfinancial Network
•Nathan Associates
•Cannon Design
•Higher Logic
•Ryan
•FORM Architects,
and
•UVA Darden School of Business which will be offering programs that are identical to those at the main campus in Charlottesville.
We are also thrilled that many companies chose to stay in Rosslyn and reinvest in our community. These businesses include:
-CEB which will be moving to one of the beautiful new Central Place buildings.
-FBR -Politico
-Sinclair -Sands Capital Management
-TetraTech AND
-the State Department who are not only staying but are expanding their footprint in Rosslyn
We also have a few notable businesses getting awards!
Three Rosslyn companies received the VA Fantastic 50 award on April 28 which recognizes the success of the fastest-growing businesses in the Commonwealth.
Congratulations to Higher Logic, ValidaTek, Inc. and Buchanan & Edwards.
And while we are on the topic of awards, I’m proud to say that last fall the Rosslyn BID was awarded the Arlington Chamber’s Best Business Award in the category of Service.
It is truly an honor for us to serve our stakeholders, as we strive to constantly enliven the Rosslyn neighborhood.
But we aren’t all business in Rosslyn.
We are proud to put on over 100 events each year for our growing community.
Many of you know that we started the holiday market it in my first year with the BID (Yep, I love to shop!)
This past year, we expanded it even further to include an outdoor bonfire and mobile bar on Friday night.
Which was a huge success! It was a wonderful experience to see Rosslyn community members of all ages and demographics enjoying the crisp evening air together in one of our most magical seasons.
Because it was such a success, you better believe we’re bringing the Holiday Market back this year and will even be expanding further it to include a full day on Saturday.
It’s the 9th and 10th of December. Mark your calendars now!
Hopefully you get our weekly eBlast – so you know that we have expanded our robust fitness programs.
This photo was taken at our first ever lunchtime workout session last December, and yes, our Operations Manager and certified personal trainer, Victor Carcamo twisted my arm into participating and I was sore for days!
It was so popular, that we’ve now turned that one-off lunch workout into a brand new lunchtime bootcamp series which we ran in April.
It was our best bootcamp turnout ever, with over 130 who signed up, clearly showing that our fitness sessions keep growing.
We are also currently in the middle of our brand new Zumba series – a great workout that is slightly lower impact than bootcamp. Perhaps I should try that one instead.. Although since I have 2 left feet, that may end badly.
Check out rosslynva.org /events to make sure you get registered for our next sessions –
This summer, we have two more bootcamp sessions coming up as well as a return of Ballet Barre in the Park, presented by our very own Lava Barre.
But really, what is the point of working hard if you can’t also play hard? At least that’s my motto!
Hopefully many of you came out and enjoyed our Cinco de Mayo pop-up beer garden at Plaza on 19th last week.
We’re looking forward to planning more of these popular beer gardens.
But probably one of our most popular events is always Rosslyn Cinema, our outdoor summer film festival.
We bring free movies to Gateway Park every Friday night between Memorial Day and Labor Day and this year we are really taking it to the next level.
For the first time this year, starting at 5pm on Fridays, stop by Gateway Park, grab your spot on the grass and enjoy a craft brew or glass of wine from our mobile bar.
You can also grab a bite from our most popular food trucks with your friends while you enjoy the fresh air and wait for the movie to start.
It’s the perfect Friday night.
And, for all of you bikers out there, next Friday is Bike to Work Day and we’ve got some exciting things planned for the Rosslyn Pit Stop in Gateway Park.
You may not have known, but out of all 83 pit stops in DC, Maryland and Virginia, Rosslyn is actually the largest.
Last year we had over 950 bikers come through the Rosslyn pit stop and this year we are making it even bigger and better with our wonderful partners at Bike Arlington. This year there will be free food, live music, a photo booth and amazing giveaways.
Our Jazz Fest is of course our longest standing event, and it brings over 8 thousand people to Gateway Park each year.
Last year was our 25th anniversary which was a wonderful milestone to celebrate, but that doesn’t mean we are going to stop innovating and enhancing the festival.
Thanks to our fantastic partners at Arlington Cultural Affairs, we’re continuing the festival this year with even hotter, fresh talent which we’ll be announcing in our eBlast and on our website tomorrow! I’ll give you a hint – one of the bands served as the backup band on several occasions, including the Super Bowl, for the legendary Prince who will be dearly missed.
We will once again add in family programming since we found that our Jazz-loving parents really appreciated having the Rosslyn Sandbox – where they could listen to the music, grab a beverage from the beer garden, and let their kids enjoy playing in the sand.
Our sandbox is a perfect illustration of a core part of the BID’s work: making the public realm beautiful and active.
And just in case you’ve forgotten what it used to look like, here it is before it’s repair.
Working with our awesome partners at Arlington Parks, we hired local artists to paint colorful murals on the structure, filled it with sand and toys and provided Adirondack chairs for relaxation.
The sandbox is officially open and this year we have plans to continue to enhance the area by adding a shade structure.
Another exciting project to enhance our public realm was a pilot project with Arlington County to test mobile vending zones spread throughout our district.
These specified zones provide reserved parking for food trucks between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekdays and have been a huge hit.
The county will be extending this pilot through the summer.
Head to our website to find a list of the zones and popular food trucks as well as convenient tracking apps.
You may have also noticed a few new elements on the sidewalk as you walk around Rosslyn.
In March, we were thrilled to launch the first installment of our brand new streetscape near the corner of Wilson Blvd. and N. Oak St.
The idea is to improve the public realm and make it even more pedestrian friendly, by taking commonly-used elements and making them beautiful, functional and reflective of our modern urban identity.
It has really made a difference in how our sidewalks look and function, and it includes
benches,
planters,
a bike rack,
a newsbox corral, an
informational marker
and litter bins.
My favorite part, which you can see in the picture here is the design which includes a custom, laser-cut pattern that emulates the nighttime Rosslyn skyline.
We are currently collecting feedback from stakeholders and look forward to expanding the streetscape elements throughout the neighborhood in the coming year.
And last but certainly not least in the area of Public Realm, we were thrilled to collaborate with the Georgetown BID and Arlington County to conduct a feasibility study to learn if the Potomac River (next to the Key bridge) is the right spot to build an aerial gondola connecting Rosslyn and Georgetown.
We are passionate about enhancing our neighborhood and look forward to learning more about how this clean and innovative mode of transportation can have a positive impact and help drive economic development for our region. Keep an eye out for a public input session as part of the study.
In the area of development, we have several exciting projects that have been approved for Rosslyn.
I’ve already shared a little bit about JBG’s Central Place which is set to deliver the residential building and public plaza at the end of this year, and the CEB office tower in 2018…
…but another exciting project recently approved is Vornado’s Rosslyn Plaza.
This phased redevelopment project will include commercial office space as well as
550 residential units,
200 hotel rooms and
45,000 square feet of retail space.
This is the largest of the development projects currently planned in Rosslyn and we are delighted that it includes many public realm enhancements, such as the creation of Rosslyn Plaza Park as well as a bike path directly from Rosslyn to Roosevelt Island.
The 1401 Wilson and 1400 Key projects by Monday Properties are also critical to achieving the Realize Rosslyn Sector Plan.
The 1400 Key project will bring a 28-story, residential building with 274 units and over 44 thousand square feet of new retail for a new grocery store in the neighborhood.
The 1401 Wilson project will feature a 24-story office building, and include 11 thousand square feet of additional retail.
The project will also bring the neighborhood an activated streetscape, and a pedestrian-only plaza — with publicly accessible upper and lower gardens — linking North Oak and North Nash streets.
For a full listing of development projects check out our website at rosslynva.org/developmentmap
Our mission is to serve our stakeholders, and be a central resource for Rosslyn information. So I wanted to share with you one of our most-used resources.
The BID’s new website refresh which went live on March 1st.
The goals of this site refresh were to:
Streamline it and make it more user-friendly
Provide resources for all of our various stakeholder groups, including residents, employees, brokers and new and existing businesses
As well as visually showcasing all that Rosslyn has to offer
We encourage you to take a look through all the new sections of the site – we’d love to hear what you think.
But the website is just one component of how we market our neighborhood and keep everyone in the loop. Subscribe to our weekly eBlast to get the latest info on Rosslyn news and events and connect with us on our social media channels.
Finally, I’d like to take a moment to recognize the Rosslyn team.
First, our amazing Ambassadors. These are the faces you see around the neighborhood rain, shine and even snow and we are lucky to have them. Let’s give them a huge round of applause.
As part of the BID’s Operations Department, our Ambassadors not only work to keep our streets clean and safe but also provide a friendly and consistent presence around the neighborhood so that people always know where they can turn for a helping hand.
I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge a very special Ambassador. (Mr. P up.)
You may not know, but Mr. P has been a Rosslyn Ambassador for almost 8 years and we receive compliments from residents and visitors about him on a regular basis.
Mr. P to recognize you for your work in Rosslyn, I am so delighted to present you with our brand new Rosslyn MVP award, acknowledging those who move our neighborhood forward. You are an outstanding team member and Rosslyn is lucky to have you. Thank you for all you, and your teammates do for our neighborhood.
Secondly, I have to thank my staff.
Though we aren't as easy to spot since we don’t wear purple every day, you will see all of these faces around the room this evening and I encourage you to chat with them about our different program areas how you can get more involved in the neighborhood .
I’d specifically like to recognize our Urban Design Director, Lucia de Cordre who is celebrating a special milestone here in Rosslyn.. (bring her on stage) Lucia has served in her role with the BID for ten years this summer and has achieved immense success in transforming the parks and public spaces in our community.
You can see her work in every flower bed and street corner and we cannot thank her enough for her contributions. Lucia, please accept this Outstanding Achievement award and my sincere thanks for your hard work in Rosslyn, and congrats on the 10 year milestone!
And last but certainly not least…
…I would like to sincerely thank both the Rosslyn BID board members and our partners at Arlington County.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: We have an amazing board. It is a privilege to work with them to continue to make Rosslyn a vibrant, downtown community.
A community organization like ours is only able to be effective through partnership. Thank you to the Arlington County Board and staff members for their efforts on behalf of Rosslyn.
And finally, I’d like to thank each of you. The Rosslyn community is built and enlivened by our wonderful stakeholders and I’m delighted to see so many of you in the same room.
As you mingle, please use the colored ribbons on your name tags, featuring the categories listed here, as a guide for your conversations with fellow community members. We often get requests from one stakeholder group wanting to be connected to another – tonight is your chance! …
Also, be sure to fill out our electronic survey. It’s only 4 multiple choice questions and if you complete it you’re entered to win some amazing prizes including a delicious gift basked from Bistro 360 and an Apple Watch!
With that, let’s eat, drink and celebrate a great year in Rosslyn and a great year ahead! Cheers.
