Reading has a fundamental importance in the integral formation
of the people and society. Reading awakens our minds, educates
us, is the most important practice for study, provides us with
knowledge, gives us pleasure, challenges us, enriches us, but
fundamentally makes us better people. Only through reading can
we better understand the things that happen to us. It provides us
with everything we need to improve, grow, and in many cases,
find ourselves. In one way or another, reading also gives us tools
that we can use later in the real world. And when I refer to the
"real world", I mean that place where we return to after reading a
good book, a good story, a good poem, textbook, essay or
newspaper, or magazine.
4. Benefits of reading
Reading promotes learning. The information received is transformed into knowledge. Reading
increases people's comprehension, attention, observation, concentration, reflection/critical
thinking, and memory.
Reading is company. It is very difficult to feel alone when accompanied by reading a book. A book
can take the form of a small and perfect companion in any place and time.
You sleep better. Reading for half an hour at night (or more if you want) induces the brain to a
state of calm that prepares it to fall asleep easily. If you have trouble falling asleep, like I do, it is
advisable to read in bed and go to sleep.
Increase our emotional intelligence. Through books we meet characters with very different
personalities. Some may be more similar to us; others less so. But by reading the facts from their
point of view we learn to put ourselves in their shoes, to see things through different eyes, and
this increases our empathy and our emotional intelligence.
5. Benefits of reading
Books have actually formed most of my world views, the core of my morality, my sense of personal honor, my
understanding of other cultures, history, science, as well as a sense of how the world works. I struggled a lot on
being left all alone because I needed reassurance or someone to chat because, I couldn’t stand the fact that me
as a persona, felt like something was missing, something about me is boring and no one likes that. I always
managed to create up lies, or things that do not make sense just to have a topic to talk about or seem upon
people as an interesting person. I was so upset at myself for recognizing that what I was doing was creating a
life that doesn’t exist nor will I have it someday. I recruited for help into books. The first one I bought was ‘The
Subtle Art of Not Giving a F’ by Mark Manson. By the name I believed it would have help me face the fact that I
was a very silent person and learn to not care about it. It didn’t work. I continued struggling on fitting in with
people and having to pretend something I was not. Time passed by and I find myself buying 2 books out of
nowhere. Just curiosity on the genre; poetry and self-help. With those 2 books, I established the habit of
reading. Best decision I could ever take. Books are the best companions to spend time alone as you will not
have any idea how minutes went away when you’re into a good book. Now I can enjoy time alone as I am with
a nice cup of coffee reading a novel as well as creating new friends, sharing true experiences, listening better
and have a great time. Books have multiple effects on our emotions, some make us feel relieved, some happy,
some sad and some disturbed. Books helped me face who I truly am.
